Mites I found out that my plated lizards have mites today. I will treat them for the mites tomorrow. Can mites crawl out of the glass aquarium and get to my other lizards?

Mites You should not just treat the lizards for mites but you should aslo clean the cages SUPER well. also did you take anything from outside and put it in one of their cages? if you did this could be a reason for the mites. and rememebr to buy more bedding... well honestly if it were me i would just get rid of the water bowl and pretty much whatever other items you have in there. That way you know FORSURE that the source of the mites is gone. and about them getting out and crawling into other cages i am really not sure about that. i wish you the best of luck. if anyone has any better information than use theirs because i am certainly NO expert on lizards. i just own one. and she has never had mites. its all purley from the internet. hehe.

Mites I will be cleaning their enclosure also. I did put some new stuff in their but it was not from outside, it was from a petstore, anyways I am 90% sure they are from the wild (I got them at a reptile expo)

Mites Witch kind of mites do you have? They can infest your whole house if your not careful. Treat the carpets and the cages along with the lizards. I am treating for the little bugs right now and I own ALOT of reps. I am no expert but trust me if its the black ones you need to take care of it quick. They can hurt your pets.

Mites  Just wanted to say I treat just in case. I don’t have the mites and hope I never do. I asked on th bp forum what was the best and safest thing to use and the response was PAM. Prevent a mite. {spelled?}

Mites i just bought my yellow lined plated lizard at a petsmart a week ago. I was told he HAD mites and was treated twice for them. He had a gray one on his tail. Is he still safe to keep or should i return him? i looked on line and it said to prevent mites is to never get them in the first place and I am pretty freaked out at how difficult it is to get rid if them. I cant stand the idea of them being in my house!! I have checked him all week and i didn’t see any more......what should i do?

Mites First is he in quarentine? He needs to be if not. You can use PAM and treat the encloser. Put him on paper towels for a sub strait so you can see if the mites are there. I use NIX and water to treat the carpets in my home. NEVER use the NIX on an animal. You take one bottle of NIX to a gal of water. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the carpet. Make sure you cover any tanks BEFORE you do this. Mite Off is ok for a temp. way of slowing down the mites but PAM is a sure fire way to kill them out. If you need a link to get PAM check the ball forum and look for my post on mites. Want me to try and bump it up? They have good ideas.

Mites Well not to be mean but if you don’t want to front the money for the vet then take him back. He NEEDS a vet check. Most sudans are wild caught so they have internal parasites, witch he needs to be treated for. So even IF the mites are gone he has to see a vet. And even when you don’t SEE the mites they can be there, the young mites are so tiny that you will not see them. Plus he HAD/HAS mites so now you need to treat the home for them and your other reptiles if you have any. They will go from tank to tank on you, your cloths, the carpet and anything else. Do some reserch and see how bad they can get if left untreated.
In my opinion you don’t need the pet if you can’t see a vet. Like I said I am not trying to be mean just honest.

Mites thanks for the advice. He is a yellow lined plated lizard not a sudan. - i meant that i do not want to pay vet fees if i didn;t have to- meaning that the mites were all gone. the pet store i bought him at said they treated him twice so i wasn;t sure if that was enough. the pet store said he was vet assured so i assumed he did go to the vet. my question was do i still take him to the vet now that i brought him home even if i do not see any mites on him. how do i know he is safe to keep in my home? or do i just bring him to the vet anyway to be safe.

Mites Did they give you the vets name or number that treated him? If so you could call and see what he/she did. Sorry about the wrong breed...just read the sudan post above that. I would assume that IF a good vet checked him then you could call and just ask what they did for treating the mites and any other parasites. If the shop can’t give you the info then yes a vet visit would be good. Do you have him in qt? And do you have other reptiles in the home? Sorry if you answered that before I didn’t see it.
Your ok as far as the mites not hurting you but another reptile could be at risk.

Mites he is alone and the only reptile in the house. I made a vet appt for Thursday just to be safe. I really like him and want to keep him so I rather have him checked out for peace of mind. Petsmart did not give me the name of the vet - i talked to the associate who treated him. She used some solution which I don;t remember the name of it - last time i talked to her she said that it might have been a tick not a mite b/c she only found one on him so now i am not sure. We’ll find out on Thursday - thanks for your help.

Mites OMG. your telling me this person sold you a reptile and didn’t even know what a tick was? Man a mite looks nothing like a tick. Google it and you’ll see. Mites are tiny solid black dots that you don’t see unless your eyesight is 20/20. And if it was a mite she saw 1 mite you have tons more. Good job on the vet visit, your not a silly as the girl who sold him to you lol! I heard that pet smaet can be "pet stupid" when it comes to reptiles and there care. I go through a mom and pop store to get feeders and any reps I want. I have even gotten a few free pets from the owner. I try and help him with set ups and cleaning when I go there. The people on here are real good help for that.
