The Sex of My Plated Lizard Hi, I have a Sudan Plated Lizard, and am considering the possibility of breeding down the road, however for starters I have no clue what sex my lizard is. I would also appreciate any additional advice from someone knowledgable on the topic. Thanks!

The Sex of My Plated Lizard Oh well, thanks anyway. Yeah, i’ve read that very few are actually bread in captivity, so it really inspires me to want to make an attempt at doing so, but unfortunately I am out of luck until i can figure out what sex it is.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard Haha, what if the only reason they don’t breed very well is because no one know’s how to identify gender. I’m sure that’s not it, but it would be amusing.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard Ok, i think i’ve figured this out. Apparently males have fringes on the bottom/back of their hind legs that females lack. As far as i can figure, mine is a male.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard Not yet...the tail smacking seems to get in the way! Mater is a brat when I get him/her out and beats the crap out of me. Never bites but man can he whip that tail. I am trying again on Sat. Wish me luck...I need it with him!

The Sex of My Plated Lizard Yeah, it’s disappointing that so many are caught from the wild, which is a reason that i’m really motivated to attempt breeding. Any chance u would have an idea what federal commercial breeding regulations are like.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard I am moving him to a larger tank in 2 weeks. May be its just a tank size issue? His is a 20 long with a log {fake log} hide. I want to put fake plants in also once I move him. Do you feed yours a pinky mouse? I tried this and he took one one week but the next time he left it sit. Just wondered if he was full on cricks and friut/green mix.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard I’ve only fed mine one pinky so far. At first, he didn’t seem interested, but after an hour, he just brutally started throwing it around, then chomped it down. Mine has been very calm overall, starting a week after a i got him, but now the past couple days he has been acting really jittery and hyperactive, which the only reason for that i can figure is that it’s around mating time, so it’s his hormones getting the best of him.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard hey, i know it’s not related, but i noticed u were giving advice on mites to someone on another topic board. i was wondering, what you feel the best methods of mite prevention are, since i plan on having many reptiles in the future and would like to do all i can to disallow any mite infestations.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard I asked the same question in the ball forum and there answer was PAM. Prevent a Mite. Most of the people that have repties say its the best to kill mites and keep them away. The best way is to do qt on any animal that comes in. My qt is six weeks if not longer. I thought I had mites once but it was baby cricks. Then I went to a shop and held a ball that was covered in mites and they look like small black lady bugs. You can’t see the babies so its hard to say what they look like. I use NIX and water {1 bottle NIX shampoo to 1 gal water} on the carpet. NEVER spray the NIX on your pet, its deadly. Cover the tanks with a towel and spray close to the carpet. Thats just what I do so if there are any better ways that you find tell me! I am always looking for a better more efficient way of mite prevention.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard Alright thanks. I actually just found a web site on which you can buy a product that kills mites on contact and is safe for the reptile. http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/reptile-supplies/vitamins-medicines-and-cage-cleaners/-/reptile-relief-1-gallon/

The Sex of My Plated Lizard that kills visible mites but you can’t do much else with it. I had no luck with it at the shop we go to. I was helping treat the rtb he had in qt. The freaking things kept coming back in 2 weeks or so. He finaly had to see a vet before he could sell her.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard well if anyone has any ?s just e mail me. i had an african or sudan plated lizard 4 about 10 years and at the time it was hard to find out anything.but became quite knowledgeable. A MALE HAS LITTLE BURRS OR SOFT SMALL NUBS BEHIND THEIR BACK LEGS AND ARE A MORE VIVID GREENISH BROWN. FEMALES ARE MUCH SMALLER THAN MALES, AND MORE PLAIN LOOKING.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard Thanks fiery lioness. I actually found that out recently, but i still may email you to try and obtain a picture or two of the burrs. Snake Charmer, another mite treatment that is supposed to work for application directly to the lizard is ivermectin, which is a cattle dewormer, but it should only be used once every couple weeks. You can also use bleach - 1 part bleach and 10 parts water for cleaning the inside of the cage, just make sure you remove the reptile before doing so.

The Sex of My Plated Lizard I will get Mater posted as soon as he decides to stop beating the crap out of me. And the mites are a pian in the a$$! I did the bleach thing for the shop and the spray and still had trouble. The vet gave the rtb a shot, not sure of what. It did the trick. The PAM was suppost to be the best thing so I got some and am using it as a pre treat for just in case moments.
