I’ve never seen one of these species in person.

My question is, are these snakes as big / thick as they look?

Are they heavy?

And what’s the tempeturement like?

They’re big, thick, and heavy.

Temperament is variable, but always go with cbb.

By the way, they’re very demanding with heat and humidity.

My male Borneo, Mr. Dani Filth, is a meanie for sure. No matter what I do he is either tolerating me moving him (but mind you only to a container or he freaks) or just bucking and hissing and pissing all the way. He strikes and all. I have tried calming him but let’s face it, he may just be a grouch forever. I won’t give up and we have an understanding most of the time. I wear leather gloves every single time I handle him or get into his cage. Weird part is when I got him and my female at the same time, she was the meanie and he was like a puppy. It’s completely reversed now. Just be ready for anything then you won’t be surprised either way. If you’re looking for the sweetest in the group, go for a black. Mine is just like a lap dog. He gets a little jumpy at times when you go into his cage but I just got him recently and he is still getting settled in. I don’t have a Blood so I cannot comment on them.

Best wishes to you!

Are their requirements more demanding than an rtb? Also do they need space or are they more comfortable in the tub type enclosure of a ball python? Just curious - I think they are gorgeous snakes. Also how long do they normally get and how heavy? I’m interested in maybe getting a 3rd snake and considering starting to research bloods. Any info like this would be helpful in making my decision - I currently have a 5 year old ball python I’ve had for about 3 1/2 years (a resuce) and a almost 2 year old 5 and a half foot rtb female I’ve had since June (she’s grown about a foot and doubled in girth - she came from a good home). Both are very good tempered and tolerate handling very well. I’m an older woman so I have the means to care for my animals.

Their care requirements are much more specific than an rtb. They are an intermediate species, while an rtb is more beginner(ish). You’ve done well with your ball and rtb by the sounds of it, and I think this could be a good snake for you. The Reds get about 5-7 feet as females, 4-6 as males (Though a 7ft female and 6ft male would be extremely large) They like closed rubbermaid spaces as neonates, but the larger enclosures (AnimalPlastics T-13 is great) when they’re older.

Mostly I deter kids who’ve had a Ball for a few months away from getting a blood. But from your post, I think you would do well if you were really committed to them.

Heres a good link, but instead of a 50-60% humidity I like (as do many other keepers) to have it around 60-65%. The reason this species is so challenging is how unforgiving they are when it comes to proper husbandry.

I would really, really advise against that. If price is what your worried about, this snake isn’t for you.

Thanks for the info, Chris. I’m going to start researching their care and requirements. I don’t purchase without being positive that it is the type snake for me and then when I start looking I have to have the gut feeling that the particular snake is the right one for me. My bp was a rescue but my rtb, it just felt right and she was just perfect for me.

Alright cool. If anyone has any questions for me you can reach me on Aim at Chriztopher89 or on Yahoo at ChristopherJ89. I can’t say that I’m an expert, but I’ve got 1.2 reds and I’ll give it my best shot.
