Thanks for all the advice offered here!
After reading many of the posts on this site, I felt secure enough to adopt my first blood python. Crunch (who is roughly five months old) has now been a member of our family for two weeks, is eating well, and is very friendly. I almost decided against a blood python due to all the bad publicity regarding how mean bloods are, but the articles here convinced me otherwise. Crunch can be a bit nervous when we first dig him out of his substrate (he nipped my 16-yo son), but seems to feel secure when I hold him. We currently have him in a 20-gallon aquarium with a below-tank heater, a ceramic heat lamp on a rheostat, over 2" of cypress bedding, and a water bowl that takes up a third of his tank. We keep the ambient temp at 85 degrees, humidity at 65%, and indirect natural light from a window several feet away. I plan on switching Crunch to f/t rats next week. Any tips on how to best accomplish this? We have been feeding him in a large tupperware container with the lights dimmed, so just heating up the rat and feeding the same way should work? Also, how long after feeding before it is adviseable to hold and handle him? One day? Two days? We plan on building a larger enclosure for him with all solid sides except a plexiglas front once he gets a bit bigger. How long will he be when he gets to a year old? Do folks put in a false bottom so as to continue using undertank heaters? Thanks for all the great tips on here! |

Yes it should be no problem turning over to frozen if you do it early enough. You will have to make sure the the rat is well thawed out and warm it up, I use a blast off a hair dryer and have done for years, then offer on tongs never had any of my bloods refuse they are generally great feeders. You can feed bloods every week or or 10 days, I stick to a 10 day cycle mostly or 2 weeks between and mine do very well. I would leave them for two days before considering holding at the least after feeding. After a year your blood will have doubled in size quite easy especially in girth. As they get bigger they will settle down but dont be surprised to hear alot of huffing and puffing or hissing its a trait with many bloods and more show than substance. feel free to mail me for any other info. snakey |
