Soaking in Water Dish for 24 hours straight

Has anyone here seen their short tail python soak in the water dish for 24 hours straight? Crunch has always enjoyed his swim, but he has been in there for 24 hours now. He doesn’t appear to be ready to shed, and ate well just four days ago. The humidity in his tank is 64%, so I don’t believe he is dehydrated. Any thoughts?

Dont worry about that lol thats perfectly normal mine sometimes lay in the water for days at a time .

You have to remember they actually LIKE water and will soak in there through choice, no problem at all Pete just let it soak away, you may find it may leave a surprise in there though.

it is completely normal for them to soak in the water, but since you had problems with mites recently Id make sure that he doesnt have them still. snakes will soak when they have a mite infestation. check it out. they can be difficult to get rid of.

Snakey68 wins the prize; Crunch left me two smelly surprises in the water dish.

Elmonoloco: I was wondering about the possibility of mites too, but have not seen any on Crunch or in his cypress substrate since I treated the enclosure with Prevent-a-Mite. How often do you change the cypress substrate? This batch is about three weeks old now.

I actually use newspaper, not cypress, but cypress is pretty mold resistant and I think changing it out once a month is ok. someone correct me if Im wrong about that.

once a month is generally ok but I switched over to newspaper years ago as it does a good job is quick and easy to clean albeit not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Plus going back to mites etc you can spot things far quicker on newspaper as well should they occur.

Snakes will soak when bothered by mites but applying this to bloods is a coin toss as they love to soak anyway.

Snakey:

I know that several people, probably the majority, keep their bloods on newspaper. My main reluctance to switch to newspaper at this time is that Crunch still likes to bury himself in his cypress bedding. I figured until he gets 3" or more in diameter, I would let him bury himself. Of course, that may be only four months away...and by that time I would be switching him to a larger enclosure with three wooden (or plastic) sides.

Do you mist the newspaper to keep up the humidity? I wet down and mix the cypress mulch once per day, and that seems to keep the humidity between 60% and 65%.

Talk about coincidence... after I made my last post I pulled Crunch out of his enclosure for his evening handling. The poor little guy had a 1/4" cypress slinter stuck in his left nostril. I give him credit - he stayed calm while I pulled it out. It was embedded pretty well too; it took a bit of a tug to dislodge. Guess I will be subscribing to the newspaper now. LOL

is crunch in a plastic tub already? if he is then the humidity is pretty easy to keep up. I mist it sometimes when the humidity gets a little lower than my liking, but I find that I dont need to do it everyday where I live. I put crumpled up shreds of newspaper in the cage also. she seems to like that since snakes generally dont like a flat open area. crunch will get under the newspaper if he can, so make sure you put down several layers.

also, Pam just finished her shed today, so Im gonna try to get some pictures up soon.

elmonoloco:

I am embarrassed to say that Crunch is still in a 20-gallon aquarium. I have been holding off moving him since (1) the aquarium is working well enough with a wooden and styrofoam lid and a UTH plus a ceramic heat source plus the 3" of cypress, and (2) I see no need to buy an interim tank knowing that in a few weeks I will buy (or build) his adult enclosure. With the wooden and styrofoam lid, it isn’t too hard to keep the humidity up, but I still like to mist and mix the cypress mulch every day (except the first two days after feeding, when I only mist). I figure I only have a few weeks left before I have to decide whether to simply buy a tank from Animal Plastics or build my own. I would prefer building my own out of oak with a melamine interior (the same material used to build custom cabinets), except that I have not learned of a way to use an UTH with a wooden bottom (unless I add a sub-floor with a heavy glass floor above that). It appears that most custom wooden tanks use ceramic heat bulbs without any UTH.

Your humidity levels are good I can understand your reluctance to change anything when all is well. I dont mist mine as the large water tub I have seems to be enough plus the fact that it gets used so much means there is water all over the place so humidity bounces around the 60’s and sometimes rises to 70 so I dont bother with additional spraying.

I just find paper easier and cleaner where cypress mulch can hold a multitude of sins that you are not able to see clearly.

whatever works for you as long as you keep it clean then its fine.

Both my Blood and my Nica. Red-tail will sit in their dishes for 24 hours plus at a time. The other snakes will spend anywhere from 2 hours there (just to drop a load) to overnight for the ATBs. I occasionally have humidity problems here in SoCal, but even when things are optimal, some snakes just like to hot tub (It is SoCal after all!)

My darker borneo has been soaking for 3 days strait because he is in shed. When my bigger borneo enters a shed he may stay in the water bowl for almost a week. First they drop a load, and that makes their body smaller so they can slip out of their old suit. After this process I noticed that my borneos are often very hungry, and looking for action.

My blood is weird some times. She likes to soak, but has never soaked when in shed. And then she has a little trouble getting the skin on her back off, but it dose come off.

yeah most snakes will be hungry post shed and not so hungry before and often they will refuse food its perfectly normal.

My bloods are always on point and ready to go after a shed and if and when they do refuse is usually a good indicator that a shed is due.
