Looking to buy a Blood, Advice?

So, I’ve been wanting to buy a blood python for 2 yrs now when I first entered the snake hobby I was recommended not getting one because it’s not a beginner snakes so I started with BPs ad haven’t had any real problems. So I now want to move to Bloods. I went to the Northern Berks Reptile Expo in search of one but couldnt really find what I wanted. I want a 1 or 1.5 yr old Sumatran or Borneo but the catch is I want one that does not have an aggressive nature. Anyone looking to sell there Blood python on here or know a good place where I can find one. By the way I know they all have an agressive nature but I know some are more docile than others.

Pat:

I am curious why you prefer getting a snake that is one year old or older. I got Crunch when he was about 6 months old, and feel that he is fairly docile now partially because I have handled him on a daily basis (except after he eats or just before a shed). If you purchase a Captive Bred/Captive Born snake from a reputable dealer, the odds are good that you will get a snake that will tame down quickly. I believe that most young Blood Pythons will hiss and be nippy until they learn that their owners are not threats. I started working with Crunch while wearing a leather glove on one hand (to dig him out of his cypress substrate and pull him out of the enclosure). I don’t even bother with the glove anymore. The glove gives the handler confidence, and one tends not to tremble or jerk if the snake makes a sudden move (knowing that the snake will not bite through a leather glove).

I would tend to avoid purchasing a snake from a reptile show, as you don’t know for certain how stressed the snake may be. I would recommend purchasing through a reputable dealer, and having the snake shipped to you. You will have greater confidence that the snake is CB/CB when ordering through a reputable dealer.

BTW: I avoided buying a Blood Python due to their fierce reputation for years, but I changed my mind after meeting some local folks who own and handle Bloods. I feel that Crunch is the most fun snake that I have ever owned. Good luck!
