 My new blood is...

My new blood is REALLY agressive. I hear that is normal. Can anyone tell if that’s true? and will she mellow out in a few months or so?

How old is she? Where did you get her from? What are you housing her in, temps, size, how long you’ve had her and how often you try to handle her? This will help us figure out what can be done.

I’ve had her for a week. She’s like 12 inches long so I’m geussing she’s young. I’ve got the humidity up yo like 75% or higher. And the temp is low 80’s. (thats as high as I can get right now) she’s in a 10 gallon glass tank, and I try to handle her once a day for 30 min or so, But I work 2 jobs so I’ve missed 2 days of holding her. I am going to get either a heat lamp or a heat pad when I get paid this week.
Should I try a little bit darker and bigger enclosier?

First off, stop all handling of her until you get her feeding. That is a golden rule with any snake, especially so with a young hatchling.

A ten gallon is a perfect size for this young animal. As to the temps, how are you measuring them? If your using a reliable digital thermometer (like an Accurite), I would strive to keep the ambient (air) temps in and around 82-85.

Young animals like yours do not need a hot spot with those temps.

BUT

This next part is important.... if you cannot raise the ambient air temps to 82-85, get the ambient temps in the lower 80’s, (80-83) and a hot spot of 88. Any hotter and you risk certain problems with meal digestion and regurge.

Your humidity should be between 60-65%. 70 percent for shedding, keeping in mind that the lower end of this scale is recommended to prevent RI. If your animal sheds well and has minimal dimpling of the scales at 60%, then work with that.

Now onto handling. Baby snakes are nippy, that is a fact. You can help ease her from this by limiting your handling until she has eaten 4-5 meals consistently, and letting her become accustomed to her new home.

Provide her with 2 identical snug hides, and a shallow waterbowl she can soak in periodically. After she is eating regularly, start to handle her every few days. Limiting the amount of stress will help calm her down along with consistent SHORT handling sessions.

Woo! Okay, that was a lot of stuff. :) I hope you have a good thermostat and the necessary means to measure your temps and humidity. Bloods aren’t as forgiving of mistakes as Ball pythons, and require you to stay on top and know what’s going on in your bloods enclosure.

I hope all of this helps you some, for further reading, please see VPI’s website, and NERD for care sheets. Read the caresheets, and you will be on your way. ;)

Thanx. I do hace a digital thermostat in her encloser, and i’ll put a hot spot on top today. If I have any other question I’ll post them. Thanx again.

She seems to have calmed down a little> I think she was a little stressed from shipping.
Thanx for the help!
