It’s kinda late in the season, but usually Home Depot and stores like that carry bags of it in the spring thru summer. Make sure it’s not a blend, but 100% cypress. Usually they mix the blends with pine, and thats not something you want to keep snakes on.

Its usally 2-3$ for 2 cubic feet.

No one landscapes in Nevada? That is the primary use of Cypress Mulch, is for landscaping.

If you cant find large bags of it, pet stores do carry small bags of cypress mulch.

Hey, why not just use newspaper, works great, its cheap and very easy to clean, not to mention easy to find. Sure it dose not look as great but if it works and keeps your snake healthy why not?

I SECOND that statement! Mulch is nice for show like at a pet store or a zoo where you do not have to clean it, other people are paid to clean the tanks or cages. I love my newspaper, the best substrate I’ve ever used and it’s always free, because hotels always have extra newspapers they are going to throw out or if some is done reading the newspaper they bought, I’ll just ask them if it is ok that I use the paper for my snakes instead of them throwing the paper away. There are several times were your snake might poop or urinate a couple or a few days in a row, and you’ll be glad you just have to roll the newspaper up, sanitize the tank, and roll new newspaper down, instead of worrying about moving messy mulch chips, collected dust, or mold build up.

 Cypress Mulch?

The reason I use cypress is because it doesn’t mold and mildew. It looks good and my bloods love to burrow down in it.

The cypress tree lives in swamps and water logged land, and the wood is naturally resistant to mold growth. It holds humidity very very well and will always dry out completely in a good amount of time to hinder bacteria levels soaring.

I personally love cypress for all of my snakes (20+), but when in a pinch will use newspaper.

I would look to using newspaper over the winter until the spring, then you should renew your search again. Look in the yellow pages for landscapers and they should be able to get you cypress mulch. ;) Good luck! (and watch the humidity during the winter too)

My bad, maybe I’m getting my experience regarding mold with shredded coconut husk confused with cypress mulch. Shredded coconut husk that come in those bricks that you have to put in water to break apart make somewhat OK humid hides but very messy and if left wet too long will definitely mold especially if urinated or defecated on because urine and poo are breeding grounds for bacteria build up which is where the mold comes into effect if not completely incinerated or replaced. The coconut husk looks like dirt once you break it apart and ok for balls that do not really burrow but I don’t know if I want my blood burrowing in dirt, plus it’s hard to tell when someone has pissed or poo’d in your garden because it soaks or blends in.

Well what about Aspen? Would that work for a blood? I don’t have one, but I’m getting one soon, and I use aspen for my other snakes.

I know this off-topic, and I don’t want to hijack this thread, but, why would a TREE NURSERY use MULCH?! They help trees, yet they use mulch to nurse them. That’s like organ transplants. Yet trees are "farmed"...It just seems a little weird. Anyway, continue with your topic :)

Also, this was a 7month old topic before it was re-brought up, I just noticed this...he/she has probably already solved the problem.
