I have joined the blood python keepers!!

This Borneo short tailed blood/marble python is my lovely new acquistion, she is probably a year and a half to two years old.
She came in on trade to our new and most wonderful reptiles only store, Reptile Rapture.
He sold her before he actually had the store open, his "pre-store" at home opening.
She came back on trade and I got her for a very very reasonable 125.
That was Thurs. She is in my QT room with a bull snake and a BP. I have her on half cypress mulch/bark from the store and half aspen/corn cob. She nicely ate a small ASF tonight so I got her pics, and put in her new hide..
I have yet to name her though

Congratulations!! Bloods are going to both frustrate you to no end and reward you like nothing before. I wish you nothing but the best. To give you my $.02 from a somewhat experienced keeper, that is not a shortail, that is a Sumatran red blood. Here’s a pic of mine, she’s a Sumatran red blood.

There are three subspecies of Python Curtus, although I have heard talk of combining them into one family. There is P. c. breitensteini which is your short tailed pythons. Then there’s P. c. brongersmai which is your red tails (mine). Then there is P. c. Curtus which is the black bloods.

And I can anticipate a few questions you’ll have. 1. They can be picky feeders and they take a lllllllllllloooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg time to defecate.

You ought to check out NERD. They have good pics of the three different subspecies. Again, congratulations!!

She is very blood. He’s right though thats a summatrian, I also have one, but no pics on this com. There amazing though, I got to breed mine last year, it was really fun. I still have one of the babies. and I could not be happier with how they all came out. I hope you have fun with her. And congrats on that nice blood.

Montessa: That is a beautiful Sumatran - congratulations! Contrary to Catfish’s experience, I have never found my Blood to be a picky eater - quite the contrary. Be aware that Bloods are very different temperment-wise than Ball Pythons, and tend to be lazy when it comes to shedding.

Again, congratulations and welcome to the Blood-Python Keepers group!

Pete, you’re right. I meant to say some young bloods can be picky. Older well established bloods have a fantastic feeding response and will rarely refuse anything put in front of them.

Montessa, I reread your post. 125 for a blood (Of any species) is the going rate. I mention this only so that if someone tells you 200+ for a blood is normal (like someone tried to do to me once) you can simply laugh and walk away.

However, like any species, morphs are going to be much more.

Montessa:

Around here, $100 to $125 for a normal baby is about the going rate for Bloods. I have never seen a Blood with the high white marbling like your new snake. Between the striking coloring and the fact that she is nearly two years old, I would think that $125 was a very good price, and double that price would not be surprising at a pet store.

BTW: Crunch thinks she’s gorgeous!
