DefTonez:

Yes, Bloods are wonderful, but be aware that they are very different than their cousins, Ball Pythons. Young blood pythons are very nippy, bloods require higher humidity, seem to have problems shedding easily, and grow to be very large and heavy. Here is a photo of Crunch patiently letting me pull left-over skin after his shed.

so blood pythons specifically have problems with shedding... what kind of complications does skin stuck to your snakes head arouse? would it not fall off with a few more days? and if not, perhaps a surface such as a rock, log, or some other form of appropriate habitat furniture might aid the snake’s shed.

DefTonez:

Crunch is lazy and spoiled; he won’t bother rubbing his old skin off. Eventually it falls off in chunks, but there is always skin stuck to his head and tail if we don’t intervene.

As soon as I see his eyecaps cloud over, I bump up the humidity to at least 70%. There is a 5" deep broiler pan with 2" deep water at all times in Crunch’s enclosure for soaking/drinking/humidity. There is a large rock in the broiler pan at all times, plus another volcanic rock (very rough) outside the broiler pan. Between 10 and 14 days into his shed, I start soaking him for 20 to 30 minutes in a tupperware with close to 3" deep lukewarm water plus his infamous red rock. After a couple consecutive days of soaking, the skin is ready to just fall off of him.

Check out the post "I Skinned Crunch Today".

Bloods don’t have problems shedding. They have very specific humidity requirements and when those are not met, the snake will have shed problems. In that respect they’re just like all other snakes. Bloods just are less forgiving of those kinds of mistakes than say balls or boas are. If a snake retains the skin on it’s head or its eyecaps, that’s not a reason to panic. It can usually be taken care of by making sure the humidity is proper next time the snake goes into shed. Only after the snake has retained eyecaps more than once would I think of going to a vet. You can put a rock or some other rough object in the cage to assist with shedding. But honestly most snakes can work their skin off by rubbing up against themselves or the wall of the cage.

Right on Catfish, if a blood or short tail retains any shed skin it is due to Husbandry..Yes their trianular shape and their mass makes for a more difficult shed but proper husbandry will permit the animal to weasle it off..
