Well It is hard to tell, how involved are you parents, do you have the funds to meet the housing requirements? I hope that by asking these questions that you are mature enough to do some real study and make sure that you can handle these kinds of snakes. If you can handle the requirements, I strongly recommend Borneo bloods. I have had good success with these guys, but I have to warn you that they have much higher needs than a ball python, or at lest not as forgiving with mistakes
IE temp, humidity, housing. I like the Borneo because it doesn’t get as big as a red blood or burm. But still has the massive girth. It’s still a big snake but if you get a baby and take good care of it you will also be older by the time it gets to be adult size. So I hope that this will help
just be prepared for this snake before you bring one home and enjoy, because you will catch the reptile bug.

I am also 14 and I have a red blood. I do have alot more expierience with other snakes than a ball python though(I have an anaconda, 2 balls, a GTP, 2 corns, a milk, a carpet,a blood, central american boa, rainbow boa, sand boa, hognose snake, and a black tail cribo). But I feel that if you do your research and really know what your getting in to then you can pretty much handle anything(to some extent). The care for a blood is not too hard but it will take alot of work and dedication to maintain it. But if you really want to go for it then do your research and think about it really hard to decide if your up to it or not.

Oh! Heres my blood!

I will have to take some new pics of our red pair..we have reds, and black and borneo short tails here, the smallest would be the sumatran blacks out of the three, I think that each species can be absolutely wonderful animals to keep provided that you can care for them properly, as mentioned above you need to make sure you keep on top with correct temps and humidity, especially as younger animals I would say..I can pass along a few good places in PM, for either species I think they are definately snakes that take patience on the owners part, you need to be around them to see their different moods and the body language that they have in order to tell these types of things, many say they are just mean snakes, I can tell you that you can grab all of ours out besides our adult pair of borneos (especially the male) but they came here as an adult pair a few years ago, and were most likely just wc imports, but the babies they throw not only are gorgeous, but all of them from clutches we have hatched were not the least bit aggressive.

I don’t necessairily recommend them as good starter snakes, perhaps working with some other constrictor species after the ball python..I suppose it depends, plenty of keepers may start out with the somewhat more difficult species as first timers, but I suppose this can vary to if they have a good starting experience or not, if you have researched, and you know you can maintain the proper conditions for keeping an animal and are prepared for situations throughout keeping it..then many in this case I would say do just fine with some animals they start out with..but you know everything has its variables..especially for each individual looking into keeping something.

Honestly most animals aren’t too hard to care for as long as you feel you can care for them properly in all aspects that are required, borneos aren’t too bad, a big thing you need to keep up on with bloods and short tails is their humidity and temps in the enclosures.

ES_Tropical your blood is beautiful, great work. I have to pay respect to those individuals that take care of their snakes. I will be scanning my pics on soon.

Ugh, humidity has been a pain in the butt for me lately, we go from 20-50% humidity in the matter of a few days. A lot of people have problems keeping humidity up, I have problems keeping them down. I just using a sterilite container with a UTH with several holes drilled in...Illinois weather...whatcha gonna do?

if its only getting 50% I would say its not high enough for a blood..a good 60% is typically what most do good at..if its humidity troubles..try changing to a different substrate that retains humidity well..such as cypress mulch, also winter cooler temps make it a lot harder to keep up the humidity levels..if its in a rubbermaid, try putting a good water bowl in there to keep humidity up, and mist em every now and then to keep good levels around.
