Getting Discouraged...Please Help! I got a new Burmese Python a couple of weeks ago from a person who was not taking care of her AT ALL! She has scars all over her and is infested with mites. I have been trying desprately to get rid of the mites and the last time the treatment took hours and she still has them. I bathed her in a Betadine bath for a couple of hours while I bleached her cage and all around it, baked all of her hiding boxes and branches for three hours, put a no pest strip in for 3 hours and then let it air out. I also vaccumed all around the cage and threw away everything immediately! I must have picked 100 mites off of her after her bath and that is not including the 100 or so that were already drowned in the tub. SHE STILL HAS THEM!!! How do I get rid of these things???
Also I am having trouble with the humidity in her cage. The temps are fine but the humidity is low and it seems to be drying up her skin a little bit. I have tried misting her cage and covering the vents mostly with tape and then a wet cloth. Then I went and bought a humidifier and placed it in many different positions and it didn’t help at all. Any suggestions? I have never had this many problems with a snake!
It doesn’t help that she is not very friendly either. She is very scared and doesn’t like to be handled. Any idea when she is going to finally get used to me? I have been trying to handle her everyday I can and she doesn’t seem to be getting use to it at all.
Any advice and help is appreciated! Thank you for reading!
Jennifer

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! Yes the rid can he harmful,You Don’t apply it directly to the snake. That’s why you spray the cage with the water and snake removed,Then when it dries you put the snake back in,then the water a day later.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! ONce the mites are gone, te burm may settle down more. As far as teh mites coming back, its most likely because the eggs are not being killed. The adults are easily killed, but eggs ahtch on a daily basis if not killed.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! i have a albino berm myself and the same thing hap pend to me he wasn’t being taken care of so i took him and he had mites what i did was take mineral oil (it makes it so that the mites cant come out for air)and saturate from head to tail then put in a container of water with lid on it (make sure the snake has plenty of air) and let it soak for a hour or so while its soaking throw every thing in the cage away bedding included. you can always get new stuff. then use mite off its in a little blue spray bottle. the reason its probably aggressive is because its irritated how would you feel if you itched all over and couldn’t scratch it. so once you get rid of the mites he should get less aggressive. although mine is still hissy in its cage but once you get him out he is a sweetheart.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! I am still worried that the RID would be toxic to the snake even if it dried. Snakes can smell and sense things that we can’t so I am sure she wouldn’t like it. I think I am going to repeat the treatment that I did once she sheds and use mineral oil instead of betadine. I have reptile relief but I will probably go and get a bottle of mite off. I also purchased a python fogger off the internet and it should be getting here in the next couple of days. Thank everyone for the advice and if you have any more suggestions let me know.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! why ask for advice if you’re going to do what you’ve already tried and proven to yourself it doesn’t work? I recommend buying the book Barron’s Pythons. A Complete Pet Owners Manual. On page36, it tells you that you can take one 2 ounce bottle of NIX human lice shampoo and mix it with 3/4 of a gallon of water.. shake and put in a spray bottle...wipe snake down with this solution. You can use this solution to clean the cage... I put the snake in quarantine... with bare necessities... news paper....hides...water bowl... this quarantine enclosure has to be cleaned every single day... your regular enclosure should be filled with bleach water and let sit over night.. the second day... I take a tooth brush and clean in the crevices....rinse extremely well.... let air dry to make sure there is no bleach residue... don’t put snake back in regular enclosure until all mites are gone.
You’ll find that everyone up here has their preferred method of treating mites... and if you’ll search the posts you’ll see that someone had it work and some had it to fail... using every method there is... probably just user error though... to get rid of mites... you have to almost be psycho about cleaning methods... once you’ve got them... they are hard to get rid of... my book does not mention that you can use the RID/NIX spray... but obviously it works for someone... but you need to find something that WORKS and stop guessing you’ll try something.. the blood loss alone from a heavily infested snake as you are describing can weaken and even kill a snake. I also noticed that you said you baked the hides... that is a common misconception that it will work... it will NOT... this is covered on page 35 of the book I mentioned. It also says that mites will become immune to treatments if used long enough so if something doesn’t work the first time.. it probably won’t work the second either. Anyway... good luck... these lil buggers are a pain in the rump to get rid of... I did mine like I described to you above and never had any more trouble.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! Like most of the people here, I went through the battle with mites myself (on my python that is), and it took two treatment to get rid of all the mites on my new python. I emptied the enclosure, washed it down with bleach water, then sprayed it with Prevent-A-Mite, replaced all the bedding (I freeze my cypress mulch ahead of time to kill anything in there), and use the RID lice shampoo on the snake itself (wiping down the snake, then letting it soak in a tupperware while I clean the cage). It has been about six weeks since the second treatment, and it appears that the mites are finally gone.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! Leave the hides and branches in,just spray everything evenly and let dry.It should not take long to dry,10-20 minutes maybe, you can tell by touching it..Be sure to remove the water and do not put it in until late the next day.
That’s the beauty of this stuff, there is no fussing with stuff, just treat and your done. Some people do another treatment a few weeks later but i did not and it worked the first time.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! I tried the whole bleaching the enclosure, baking branches, snake soaking thing to get rid of mites and it failed time and time again. I got a can of P-A-M and sprayed the enclosure once, and I haven’t seen a mite in over a year. Can’t get any easier than that.

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! What should I use as substrate afterwards? Also what should I soak the snake in? I soaked her in betadine and it kills all the mites that are on the surface but she still has tons of mites under her scales...that is why I was going to try it once she sheds. I have tried picking mites off with a q-tip and mineral oil and just with my hands but there are too many of them and some of them are too small for me to see without picking up every single scale. What about around her enclosure? Should I close the enclosure (air tight) while the RID is drying and them let it air out?
Thanks
Jennifer

Getting Discouraged...Please Help! I only use newspaper as a substrate. you can soak the snake in warm water just to get some of the mites because the rid will take care of the rest , just make sure you dry the snake off before you put it back in the cage. yes close the enclosure during treatment and also spray the floor around the cage for extra protection if you want.
