I have had my rtb, inga, for about 4 years now, she was a year when i got her, she is dog tame, never has struck, never bit---when she’s grumpy she gives a hiss and i respect that..; when i got her from
Deedle, she was a year oll, 4 feet, 3 lbs, she is now about 7 feet, about 40 lbs. she has no feeding response - a great eater but i can put my hands in the cage at feeding time, put her ft food in the cage, she no longer restricts or strikes her food. she is kind of afraid if i move the food so it looks alive. Ihandle her for 3-4 hours a day, 3-5 days a week even if she jusst sits on the back of the chair or lays in the bed with me. she could get out of her cage if she wanted to but never tries, also if i fall asleep with her and she climbs off the bed, she curls up next to the bed and waits for me to get up and tke her back to her cage. with all the burmese up for adoption, i am wondering if i could handle one. i am the only one in my house who loves reptlies and dont’ know if i get a burm, i will be able to tame her up like Inga.
I don’t have a second person to help at any time and wonder if she gets f/t will i be able to handle her myself.

I would not recommend doing any of the above with a burm.. They MUST have a secure enclosure, and they have CRAZY feeding responses, even if on f/t...

Hmmmmm, well ummmm this post has left me kinda speechless.Regardless what type of snake you get you always have to be on your guard cause well they are a snake lol there not a lap dog. It’s great that you feel comfortable, but just so u know your snake ain’t WAITING for u to put it back in it’s cage it’s just not that smart. As for wanting a Burm ya personally I think anyone could make a great owner with research and common sense. Do I think it is right to have large snakes in an unsecured enclosure NO, do I think it is a smart idea to handle a full grown burm by yourself NO. I do fully agree with Timmay in the fact that they have crazy feeding responses. So what you need to do is seriously think about a secure enclosure for any snakes you have now or in the future, and really try to understand a snake is a snake and as I stated not a lap dog. Sorry if I am so blunt but it just upsets me when people think they TAMED there snake, cause that’s when mistakes happen and people get hurt.

Burm = pitbull with steak kinda feeding response lol. No matter what I feed my girl she eats it..and hits it fast and hard. Ive only had her since last Oct but I know from that short time burms are not a snake you just jump into owning. I did 2 yrs of research, 3 months of handling her at the shop every other day and taking care of her while the shop owner was on vacation.
You MUST have a secure enclosure. I use clips {for now} and 4 10lb weights to hold her screen lid down. Honey never offers to get out but I refuse to put her or my self in danger. Better safe than sorry. And she is only 7 ft right now and not once have I had her out with out some one else in the room with me. Preferably some one who has experiance with snakes and how to handle them.
You never TAME any animal to be honest. Even the best pet has some wild instinct and may do some thing unexpected. I know my snakes very well, that by no means gives me the right to be lax in how I handle them. You and your pets saftey are in YOUR hands. If you screw up they are the ones who suffer.

Try to think of this whole FL mess. Pretty much every thing you just said is why people end up on TV boohooing that there snake killed, hurt and ect ect ect. So please do us a favor and DONT buy a burm unless you take time to do your home work!

Sorry to be rude...just sick of ignorant people making life hell for responsible owners.

Well then why the silly questions? I hope if she gets a burm she will take the precautions we all do. They get alot bigger than a redtail and are a bit different as far as attitude. Not saying burms are mean {mines a good girl. calm and very handled.} just dont want to see any one get hurt.

Any way...just be safe!

PS...the feeding response is fast and hard for mine and my friends. Both eat anything put in there enclosure and eat it fast.

I was unaware of this thread or the anaconda one as I could never own either. I do frequent the anaconda forum because they are awesome but not often lately. I dont know what to say anymore....I tried to keep everyone nice and civil but everything is now contradicting....I feel dumb...

And sra, if that was about me, i was in no way bashing you. I was just trying to get everyone to get along. Friends?

lol likuids we are all speaking about the original poster, I myself dont own any anaconda’s YET lol still trying to talk hubby into that one, But I do own a burm,3 redtails,2 brb’s and 2 bp’s. I think it’s really nice when people try and help out in posts especially when they feel someone is getting picked on or bullied I don’t agree with that behavior at all BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT in this cause I stayed quiet and read and read and read somemore, just to see someone totally ignore and argue the facts of people who are VERY experienced and love this hobby and ddon’t want it to be jeoperdized but silly ignorance. Anyways lol nothing was directed at you

hey Josephine 11 /Debbi, i think you should start thinking in the "THUS FAR" realm..
as in "a great eater but i can put my hands in the cage at feeding time", thus far
or "she could get out of her cage if she wanted to but never tries,", thus far..
...
and if you dont have a second person to help ever.. its not a good idea to get a snake that might be 16+ feet... because no snake is "Dog Tame".. i mean..burms are snakes.. they could eat a dog if you let them.. or if they went outside when you fell asleep and met your neighbor’s prized chihuahua ..
but it sounds like inga is a real cool snake.. thus far
cheers
justus
