You could find these answers by doing some research, google is your friend..

You’re gonna need to give it rabbits.. unless you wanna feed it SEVERAL jumbo rats in one sitting..

These are not beginner snakes.. how much experience do you have..

Well its gonna need rabbits.. and they’re not cheap compared to rats.. that is unless you plan on feeding a big burm several rats at once, which would be a pain and is usually not recommended..

I’ve kept carpet pythons as well as colubrids and neither of them are anything like a burm.

What are you planning on doing with a giant snake when you go to college or whatever?
Do your parents realize how big they can get?
Do you have the space required for one?
Can you afford the food bill?

Just a couple of the many questions you need to ask yourself first..

i know they are nothing like a colubrid haha but i have the space for one. my dad knows that a male is normally 10-15’ (i would get a male). its a long time until college. i have years to figure that out. other people in the house like snakes so i could have them feed it. and rabbits are only $40... when they’re older dont they only need to eat once every 2 weeks?

The space for it isn’t the main thing you should be worrying about. You need to first, and foremost like Timmay said is if you can afford to have one. If you are going to keep an animal of that size, you NEED to fit it the required meals that it should properly take.

If you don’t like feeding rabbits, I wouldn’t get one. Because rabbits are what is going to be best for it once it reachs that size. It will get MORE expensive buying multiple jumbo rats at a time. Rabbits satisfy them more. Also, you have to understand how INCREDIBLY strong they are. Burmese are nothing like even the biggest of boas. This is something you should do careful research on, and make sure you are ready for this commitment.

Lastly, make sure you can HANDLE keeping this snake. They are powerful animals, not to be kept as a beginner snake because they look cool. I am not tryin to be rude or anything, but please, know what you are getting yourself into. You may see all the people on here who have these large animals, but they have years and years of experience with them. It’s not as easy as it looks. And depending on how old you are, your parents shouldn’t be helping you pay for their food or anything.

This is your responsibility. I have seen so many kids take up burms, thinking they can handle it and watching it fail completely and the snake being miserable because they couldn’t handle it and not be able to afford the right food.

i can feed it rabbits.. i just need to get dead ones or to kill them first. you say the people that have these have years and years of experience w/ them.... well they all needed to start with their first burm. this is the time i get mine. i will be able to afford the rabbits if its just $40 every other week. thats not bad.

now we answered question 1... thank you for all of this.

about question 2... how big do you keep yours in... im making a custom cage thing for all my snakes. its going to be 8’ long and 2’ in depth.... would 8x2x2 be a good size for a burm... it seems like it would be good.

Yes, 8x2x2 would be perfectly fine for ONE adult burm. Don’t house them together though.

Is there someone in your area that has a large burm you could go handle?

You really need to think about the future and what your plans are for college, moving out etc. You’re not going to be able to have a giant snake in a dorm and there’s already enough unwanted large burms..

You need to think about the cost of feeding, caging, heating, and misc. expenses that always seem to come up.

For caging I would personally go atleast 3ft deep, but 2 would suffice.

That is definatly something you have to take into consideration. Your parents are not going to want to take care of a 15ft snake when you go away to school.

I’m gonna say it anyway. You’re too young and I’m sure there’s plenty of people that will agree with me... I know you’ll probably get mad, and I realize you’re gonna do it anyway if you want to.

You do realize that these snakes can and do reach lengths of 6 ft or more within their first year and will need rabbits?

I think you need to do a LOT more research and some serious thinking before you go through with this...

They do get big fast and as they get big they also get heavy
My burm grew about 7 feet in a year and is now about 20lbs if not more.
you will need help rather quickly if you decide to get one also be sure to hook train it
I kind of agree with the others that this is not a snake for someone your age.
I would recommend staying with the boas for now but it is your choice.

+1

At 14, most kids keeping snakes aren’t even keeping boas and carpet pythons, I think you should consider yourself lucky.
Gain some more experience when your boas and carpet are larger and then maybe consider taking on a burm.
Just my 2 cents but I’m sure I speak for many other people as well..

$40.00 for a rabbit? Yikes! That must be a petstore. I’d be broke in a month if I had to spend that much. I have a couple local rabbit breeders (check trader magazines in your area) that sale live ones from $5.00-$10.00 each, but you are better off to buy from someone like Rodent Pro who sales frozen feeders and stock up.
Not sure if it was mentioned but females get larger and much more girthy than males. As was mentioned, they are not a beginner snake so make sure you do your homework before purchasing one as they do require certain specific temperatures and humidity levels. Good luck if you do decide to pursue it.

Honestly I dont think he is to young..If he really does have people/parents in the house who like snakes and arnt nervous around them then he is fine..I dont think a 14 year old kid should handle a large snake by him self..I’m only 15 and my biggest is a 6ft red tail boa and i wont handle him by my self even tho he has not acted aggresive...When i was 13 my brother 17 we talked to my parents about letting us get a burm and we did We had to get rid of him when we moved because we moved to were they wouldnt let us keep animals..he was 10 ft long and never had problems with him...i’m thinking about getting a brum agin but a lil bit larger and was wandering about how big i should make the tank for a full grown burm most likly a male also....But i say if you KNOW not think you can handle it i say go ahead and get it..Just keep in mind he will get large and you will need to thing years down the road when you have kids and a wife if you will still want that snake.
