I went from a ball python, to a common boa, and then to a tiger retic and I woulden’t of done it any other way. I love my retic, it’s been one of the best snakes I’ve ever owned. I’ve had him a little over a year and he’s about 7 foot long and, it’s hard to believe, he’s tried many times and failed, but NEVER bit me once =] There great snakes just MAKE SURE you have the time, money, and room for one. Always start off with a male as they stay a bit smaller then the females. I just spent $415 on a 8x3x2 custom cage for my little boy. It’s going to take up a lot of room but I have that. It took me a while before I could get enough money for this cage meanwhile he’s cramped in a little enclosure. I wasn’t really ready when I bought him but I did my best and raised him right. He’s very healthy thick and long with a AMAZING temperament, especially for a retic. I paid $125 for him when he was two weeks old at a local reptile show. He’s also a tiger and very pretty. pictures do him no justice.

I think your first snake should be one that you are willing to learn from and still keep afterwards. If retics are what you really want to get involved with then get a small CB one and start from there.

Hmmmmm hmmmm..... I dont know ..... How big is your red tail? I think maybe you should go with a blood python! These snakes could be easy or hard to take care of but you should have some more experience and then maybe think of getting a BIG snake! like the guys said before me get a cb one and start off with a male! Then if you want more get more ! but remember they grow fast! I would suggest to get the blood and then the retic but thats just me! Now if ya want go ahead and get one. But you might want to think this one twice also you can get a dwarf they get around 8-12 ft not bad!

Notice that i did not say that experience is not required to handle a retic. But i have seen a lot of people getting ball pythons and even red tails and have them for a year or so, just to justify to the world and themselves that they "did the homework" before getting a retic. Then, once they get the retic they start thinking about how the hell they will get rid of that other snake they never really wanted in the first place...
I just think that if that is going to be the case, its better to skip straight to the subject, get a juvenile snake and "grow along" with it while learning... (the less of 2 wrongs)

Yeah I think you could start with a large snake like that, and let you knowledge and experience grow with the snake. They don’t grow SO FAST! that your surprised and don’t know what to do. For a male it takes about a year to get to a "good" size. If in a YEAR you didn’t learn enough to handle a snake of that size, well my good sir I don’t believe you should have a snake at all!

The is nothing wrong with a retic being your first, just by from breeder and watch your snake. work on head shyness first and watch feeding response. Retics make a whole lot better pet than most people realize.
