Are retics typically more or less aggressive than burms?

I have a few burms but i really want to get a tiger retic. I’ve heard that they are very aggressive, but i also hear that a lot about burms, so I’d like to get a non bi-ist oppinion. I think they’re cool as hell and i really want to get one.

it all depends on the snake you can’t really say a certain species is aggressive I have come across both aggressive and "tame" tics and burms

retics are alot more active then a burm is. And there digestive system seems to work alot faster then a burms. I feed all my snakes on the same day and the retics are always the first to go to the bathroom lol. BUt my retics are just as tame as my burms. There just a bit more active.

well you can’t really say a species of snake is aggressive but you can sure say that nile monitors are very aggressive, much more then other monitors.. ones that are legal to keep in the US anyways.

Having had burms and currently having retics, I can say this as others have said it is all about the handling. If you don’t handle them the retic is going to be much more aggressive. With daily handling from the time they are young they both become equally tame.

While this is my opinion I will tell you without naming names, a person posted he got a retic and was handling it once a week and he was confused and having aggressive issues. A retic REQUIRES daily handling when you get it al lets say 4-12 weeks old and needs it daily for a solid year plus then you can go to lets say 4 days a week if you need to but daily handling is better but you have to develop a good handling base while the snake is young. I think this is true for any snake but especially for retics.

If you are sitting watching TV, get your snake out. We all work we all have snakes, some of us have a few to several. We all have busy lives, but why not play with your pet when you are sitting in front of the TV for most people that is about 2 hours a day. Take the time and either species and it will be a dream to own. Don’t and you could have issues with either.

thank you that’s a good answer. yea i don’t get to handle my snakes everyday after they get over 8 ft. because i don’t want them around my dogs and i don’t always have an extra person around incase something happens. but i handle them all pretty often. the juveniles get handled every day for at least the first 4 months.

My retic Rusty at 14 feet is so friendly/tame/trained because of daily handling I have no concerns about handling him alone. Not that I am not aware of his power and careful. I have taught him when the cage door opens it is time to come out and play so he glides up on my open hand over my shoulders and hangs out until I put him down to play. This is what I just did and it worked great, but to put this is perspective Rusty lets me scratch his nose and get loose shedding scales off his head and even his eyes with my fingers without me having to hold his head. All the handling I did got him to this point.

Agreed; retics that aren’t handled often usually end up grumpier than those handled consistently.

This is my favorite dwarf retic posing with my (ex-ophidiophobe) cousin. Good care and handling will ensure that any retic will be this "nice" ;)

Our retic is anervous girl and tank defensive but fine when shes out,our burms are all fine in or out of the tank. I would like to add that our adult nile monitor is possibly the most tame and friendliest reptile we have.
