Hey All! Hey there, names Ryan. I’m fairly new to pythons. Actually, never owned one before i discovered carpet pythons. I’ve had quite a few snakes, basic mostly, and i felt i was ready for a new experience. I spent a few months doing research on the different species of carpets, and settled on a west papuan. Just my luck as well, I found a proven female at an expo i frequent.
Kira

warm side and arborial section.

a personal favorite.

Hey All! Excellent choice and beautiful snake! IJ/WP’s are a personal favorite of mine. I have two.
That’s a really nice setup you have also. I’m sure that snake is very happy.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Hey All! Thanks, after having been with her for the last few months, i can say that she is the best snake I’ve worked with so far. She’s not the easiest in terms of handling, but she’s never skipped a meal, is always active, and her attitude leaves nothing to be desired.

Hey All! What is challenging about handling her? She looks pretty young in the pics. Is she a biter? If so, I think you’ll find that if you keep persevering with gentle handling, she will change at around two years. I heard this about carpets and found it to be true for both of mine when they hit about 2 years. They just tend to calm down a bit at that age for some reason. Of course, making the snake feel safe and secure when you’re handling it is key.

Hey All! Those were taken a few months ago, around October, since then she’s grown substantially. She’s about two and a half. I’ve been watching her for about three months, it seems to me she’s just cage shy. She isnt a biter, per-se, she does the mock lunge, just head butting my hand. When I do get her out of her enclosure though, she’s such a sweetheart.

Hey All! With mine, there was a definite change in their fear of me when they reached about 4 1/2 feet. I think the head butting thing is kind of humorous myself. I’ve seen that before and its much nicer than being bit!!!
She has a lot of nice yellow in the picture!

Hey All! I was going to say (but forgot) that one of the changes I noticed when they reached about 2 years is that before that time, when they were cruising around at night, if I opened their cage door, they would try to get away from me and retreat to the back of the cage. Now, if I open the door when they are cruising around at night, they will immediately want to come out and don’t mind me helping them to do so. :-)

Hey All! I couldnt agree more with the headbutting part, its both quite entertaining and alot better then being bit. I’ve only been hit once by her, and it was entirely my fault. Feeding days are a bit hectic :) Her color is actually changing. She was around a year old when i got her, and she was very bright then. Now, the upper half of her body has turned a deeper olive color, while the other half and her underbelly are a creme color. She’s getting close to four feet now, so hopefully there will be some noticable changes. I must say though, your jag is an amazing animal.

Hey All! Yeah, the color change is one of the neat things about carpets. :-)
Thanks for the compliments on my IJ/Jag sib. Although not as striking as a Jag morph, I couldn’t be more happy with her.
Here’s a recent pic. She’s just a few inches shy of 5 feet now. I’m hoping she doesn’t get more than 6 so I don’t have to worry about getting a larger cage.

Hey All! She’s absolutely amazing. What size enclosure do you have her in now? I’m getting concerned that Kira’s cage is getting a wee bit small.

Hey All! I have her in a 3’ x 2’ x 17" boaphile cage. Believe it or not, I kept both my carpets in a 12"x12"x12" exo terra cage until they were 3 feet long and then moved them into the larger cages. I know it sounds really small. I had a heat lamp over the top with a branch where they could bask at about 88 and one hide box down in the corner where it was about 80 and a water bowl. I used one of those red incandescent bulbs and I would always see them come out at night to bask. :-) It worked really well for them. I basically used the design from southern cross reptiles in their Home Sweet Home article. They have some good articles, btw.

Hey All! Oh, ok. What do you think of the boaphile cages? I’ve heard mixed things about them. I was looking into the eight foot one for my tegu in a few months, but didnt know if they were worth the price or not.

Hey All! You know, I really like my boaphile cages for my snakes, but I don’t know how they would do for a Tegu. They have plexiglass doors which a Tegu might scratch up a lot. You might ask the folks on the Tegu section of the forum and see what they say.

Hey All! I asked around on the Tegu section a while ago, no one had any prior experiences with them. The plexi glass being scratched wouldnt concern me, I had the idea of placing a plank of wood going across each side of the door as sort of a substrate "dam".

Hey All! Yeah, the dam on the boaphile’s is only about 4 inches. Have you looked at any others like Animal Plastics or Monster cages?

Hey All! Before I found boaphile, i was looking at animal plastics, but i had heard horrible reviews about the structural integrity of the larger cages. I haven’t heard of Monster cages, ill look into those.
