My new gold phase white-lipped. Well, I picked up my new guy on Friday. He’s getting acclimated now, so the pictures aren’t too good. We’re converting an old desk into an enclosure for him, so his current enclosure is just temporary, but it’s working very well. Here’s his setup and a few pictures of him.

He’s been hanging out under this moss since we got him

Here he is

My new gold phase white-lipped. NICE!!! Can’t you see how important that moss is to them? The love to hide in it. I would also take that half log and bury it so that the hide is a little tighter.
I’ve noticed that my python had been having some shedding issues. But the humidity was so high, that when I lifted the top, water droplets fell off that had condensed on it. So, I threw in a few pieces of broken cinder block, and that seemed to help out a lot.
Keep us updated.

My new gold phase white-lipped. I actually just moved the big cave over to that side and put moss in the log and the cave. I had to take him out to do it, but I think he likes it much better. It’s a bit cramped in there with that big water bowl, so I’m going to have to go out and hunt down a smaller one. He was doing a bit of hissing (which sounds like sneezing), but he was fine when we got him out. He gets his 2 rat pups on Thursday, so until then he’s getting left alone.

My new gold phase white-lipped. I got tagged the other day. It was totally my fault, I sort of fell forward and she thought I was going to crush her. How’s this one’s temperament?
Don’t forget, a regular handling schedule is really important. Otherwise you’ll have a nasty snake on your hands.

My new gold phase white-lipped. He’s very calm and loves wandering around outside his enclosure. He’ll get handled on a regular basis, but not until this weekend. We like giving our new reptiles a week to get used to their new surroundings before we start handling them. I have yet to get bit by any of my snakes, but I have been bit by wild snakes and pet store snakes. I’m still waiting for the day when my RTB gets fed up with me.

My new gold phase white-lipped. Yes. He’s very beautiful. I got him from Markheim tropical fish and pets Link. They’re just north of Buffalo, NY. Unfortunately, I don’t think they ship and this is the first white-lipped they’ve had in 4 years. I’m so glad I got him. And to top it all off his temperment is great. He eats tomorrow, so I’ll try to get some better pics and post them.

My new gold phase white-lipped. Well, I tried to feed Zane last night and he wasn’t having it. At first I thought he might be in shed, but I was using tweezers to hold the rat pup in front of him and he was striking at my hand and face. He’s not a happy boy. I’m going to give him another week to acclimate before I decide it’s his enclosure or the room he’s in that’s making him act this way. When he was living at the shop he had a humid hide and aspen as his substrate, so he did not have the 75-90% humidity in his whole tank.....just the humid hide. He has been out wandering the enclosure at night, so he’s active. I wouldn’t think him being in a room with a bunch of other reptiles would bother him since he was at the shop, so I just don’t know what his deal is at this point. I’m going to chalk it up to the fact that he’s still getting used to his new home. I just hope he eats for me soon and lays off the striking. I don’t mind getting bit......that’s the risk you take by owning a snake, but I’d like to hold him without knowing I’m going to get tagged every time.

My new gold phase white-lipped. From informed white-lip owners - just a little FYI info is hard to come by for them.
"I keep my adults at an ambient of 78-82 with a basking spot of 88-90. They rarely bask, even after meals. I actually know a female is gravid by a sudden increase in basking frequency. Humidity is moderate, probably around 75% or so. I only mist when their opaque and will tip the water bowl when they are trying to shed, but that’s the only thing special I do for humidity. I use 3x2x2 cages for adult males and 4x2x2 for adult females. The important husbandry tip is in photoperiod. The lights drive the lives of these snakes and they have in cage 18" tube bulbs on a timer giving them 14 hours during summer months down to 6 hours for the winter. Temps drop only slightly in the season change."

My new gold phase white-lipped. Thanks for the info. I have a heat lamp which stays on for 12 hours and then off for 12. I’ve never heard of a 6 hour photo cycle. I drop my reptiles down to 10 hours during the winter. He ate for me today. He actually was getting ready to shed last week. I’m going to put aspen over his Eco Earth since he was on aspen at the reptile shop and was much calmer. I know he is probably still getting used to his new home, but I want to do this just to put my mind at rest. He’s already tagged me 3 times and my boyfriend once. I want my happy snake, that I can hold without getting bit all the time, back. Well, he’ll either get there on his own or with regular handling.

My new gold phase white-lipped. That info was provided by Selective Origins. They are one of the few people in the US with an active breeding program for these amazing animals. I am pretty sure they use the 6 hour day for breeding purposes. I doubt that the aspen will calm the animal down, I could be wrong though... I have just never heard of it making a difference. These animals are know to be somewhat aggressive. Especially WC and/or Northern (Golden) phase animals. In fact Selective Origins recently sold a pair of their black phase animals due to the females over zelous tendency to defend her eggs. With these animals I would expect to get tagged. They are after all wild animals, and that is what wild animals do. They are just afraid that you are going to eat them. Also as they get bigger most animals tend to calm down because they do not percieve you as such a threat. Good luck and rememeber research is important but always look at the source.

My new gold phase white-lipped. I’ve done a lot of research on all the animals I own. This guy is captive bred and was not aggressive/defensive at the shop. I held him at least twice a month from December until I brought him home two weeks ago. I’m going to put aspen over the Eco Earth just to see if it does make a difference with his mood. I don’t know if it’s going to help any, but it’s not going to hurt to try. I don’t mind getting tagged now, but I’m going to work with him for the fact that I don’t want to be tagged in the future on a regular basis like I am now. We are now at 6 times in 2 weeks. I keep my hand in there so he doesn’t think striking is going to get me to run away. I guess I’ll find out if that works too.
