Carpet pythons Not starter "pets". A good starter pet would be like a mouse or a hamster. A good starter python or snake in general would be like a corn snake, a kingsnake, pretty much any colubrid, a ball python, some people believe that carpet pythons are good beginner pythons, some don’t(same with red tail boas). Rainbow boas, rosy boas, Pretty much anything that stays relatively small. I personally believe that any carpet python is an alright starter python. 13 seems a bit young though. As long as he takes time to take care of it, it should be fine. As it gets older money will be a concern as well. I’d rather him get a ball python or a corn snake but its up to him. good luck!

Carpet pythons Hello "carpondro"17, And exactly what he said. I like tangerine and honduran milk snakes. All colubrids are easy and inexpensive snakes to care for. Like I said above.

Carpet pythons I’m a 13 year old girl and i got a 2ft JCP today. She’s not to bad just jumpy. The only thing that i didn’t realize was that she was shedding so she couldn’t see me and kept trying to bite everyone that came near. She’s my first snake. but then again i learned everything from my brother(kept reptiles for 13yrs in may) so if he’s a beginner it’s different. The money may be a problem if parents don’t pay for tank and food.
BTW this isn’t in a nasty way.

Carpet pythons I have one Irian Jaya and one Irian Jaya hybrid. Both of them are very docile, feed well, and openly display themselves during the day. However, my pure Irian Jaya absolutely will not eat rats. Some of them are known for having this reputation for refusing rats. If you don’t mind spending money on 6 mice per feeding for an adult, then no problem. The males typically stay in the 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 foot range and the females 5 to 6 foot. Some do get larger. They normally reach this length in about 2 or 3 years.
My only concern is that the boy really is committed to caring for the snake. If not, you will shoulder the responsibility. Be prepared to keep it in a 3’x 2’ cage for a male, or a 4’x 2’ for a female. They are beautiful and very easy to care for compared to other pythons. Do all the research you can on Irian Jayas before purchasing one. If you really like them, be ready for the temptation to get more!!!! =)
Check out Anthony Caponetto’s site for a good care guide for these snakes.
