Who Better To Ask Than You Guys

I currently have a corn snake a ball python and a pair of super dwarf retics. I am wanting another snake but i am trying to decide on what i want. So why not ask you guys what you keep and why they are a great pet. I am looking for something that can be handled daily is easily tamed and while I was thinking about a burmese my wife prefeers something smaller than 20 feet lol. up to 10 feet is fine. And better yet if you could post pictures of them that would be great. An early thanx to everyone or anyone that replys. :)

Although NO snake is easily tamed, many who are handled daily and are cared properly for are great pets. I have 7 snakes ranging from an albino corn snake, 7.5 pastel bcc, 5.5 colombian bci, ghost ball, regular ball, and a yellow anaconda. I would suggest getting a type of red tail, they are big, but not too big. Mine have great temperaments, but each snake is different. I strongly discourage getting an anaconda, they are very unpredictable and temperamental. Mine is starting to realize that she is getting bigger than myself and trying to intimidate me! lol She’s great though, I love her.

Here are some pics: (No pic of my corn snake or my new bp)

Maybe try one of the smaller scrubs if you feel experienced enough like the tanimbar scrub they only get about 8ft, or moluccan scrub they max at 12-13 and are usually pretty calm if you get them as babies even imports. but be prepared to deal with a possibly mean tempered 12 snake that grabs on to everything with its tail, so they can be difficult to get out for cage cleanings, and are very difficult to get off of you if they dont want to come off even tame ones. check out moreliapythons.com great forums

I’d go with a Brazilian rainbow boa. They only get about 6 ft, and have great color and personality too. Scrub pythons are probably not the best snake if you just want to cuddle with it.

I also don’t like using the word tame with any reptile, because it implies a level of predictability, and it’s the people who get to comfortable that end up getting bitten. Still, some snakes are less inclined to bite than others. However, most baby pythons are nippy.

Ok so i have read some of these replys and I guess i should word this better lol. so when i say tame i dont exactly mean kitten tame lol. what I am saying is for instance I got my super dwarf retics and they were nasty little buggers at first everyt ime I would walk by ( if they were out) they would strike at me. well a week later (now) I have handled them so much that they dont even try to bite anymore even after I feed them ( I bag feed btw) I can take them out of the bag and put them back in their enclosure just fine. does this mean they will never strike at me? No it simply means they are ALOT better than when I got them. On experience I have been working with reptiles for about 10 years now. I study in my spare time all I do is work play with my reptiles and study up on new and more reptiles lol. I am areptile nut lol. What I am hoping to obtain from this post is people saying oh yeah this guy’s guidelines fits my reptile all the way I wanna tell him all about my reptile and how much I love it and how it is what he is looking for. I know about alot of reptiles but learning only goes so far. for instance I heard forever about how mean retics are but once i got one I love them they are really sweet snakes. I can read about retics all day but all that I learn is nothing compared to the first hand experience you guys have with your herps. So as far as experience goes in my opinion I have it. But that only matters so much cuz in my opinion how can someone say you do not have experience it’s like well how am I gonne get the experience if you say I shouldn’t have it cuz i dont have the experience lol. The real question is this "are you ready for the experience of owning one?"

Well, I still like rainbow boas, even after reading your post. However, if you want something different, get a white lipped python. I don’t see a lot of people keeping those. I have a black phase. Normally you see the golds and olives. They stay smaller and have different coloration:

I just like the personality and appearance of these pythons. Plus, their skin is butter soft (which requires high humidity to maintain). They are curious buggers and considerably more active that a ball python. They are not difficult to take care of, but they are prone to bad sheds, so the humidity must be high, and they need something rough like a broken cinder block to remove sheds. My girl got some stuck sheds even with the humidity at 85%, but fixed the problem with the cinder blocks.

Cheers

I think my wife actually is liking the rainbow boa idea. Though i must say that white lipped python you have is gorgeous. I dont suppose anyone has any pics of a full grown rainbow boa? We have been looking for a pic of one for a while now and just cant find one lol. I know they get like 6 feet but I have a SD retic thats almost 3 foot and tiny cuz they are long and slender so shes wanting like a size comparison pic of an adult. Also very weird but i was showing her an african rock python and she actually liked it lol. anyone got any pics of these and if you own one any words on temperament?

I just googled "Brazilian Rainbow Boa" and found lots of pics. I don’t want to post them though, because of the copyright rules.

carpets are fun, and if price isn’t an issue Black headed pythons are one of the most impressive snakes to look at when adults, and are quite calm as adults.

the carpet here is a reluctant feeder so just to warn you that they can be a bit frustrating like that i have more problems feeding this carpet than any ball python but i would reccomend a burmese python but please be advised the average is 10-15 feet and i no at least 9 people with 17 footers

If you get a burmese, maybe you can rescue an adult from a shelter?

Lol yeah I really want a burmese but the whole reason I have this post is because the wife doesnt want a 17 footer lol. I tried til I was blue in the face to talk her into one THough I know not all Burmese get 17 feet I always plan on my snakes reaching the biigest size they can get so I cant just tell my wife that it wont get that big. We actually have definitely decided on a brazilian rainbow boa now we just nned some good places to find them. I know that rainbows r us place only has 1 left. I really appreciate all the help you guys have given though :) In fact it was one of you that made my wife decide on the BRB. I personally am just happy to add another member to my family lol. I was actually looking at a dumerils boa but the wife doesnt like the look of them lol. Well thanx again guys.

btw that carpet that chezequerz was talkin about is mine(he’s my brother). Here’s some pic’s of her:

She’s called Aphrodite. she 2ft atm. There is a possibility that she’ll get to 8ft but i’ve only seen about 3 ppl that have them. We think that the food that we were given(got it off the shop) is to big so from fluff’s were going to downgrade to pinkies.

just make sure you read some caresheets on them, they have some special requirements, newnenglandreptiles.com has a pretty decent one. They are a very fun species to work with and I wish you luck on your purchase. also I’m not trying to sound like an expert or anything , its just I dont know what your
experience is and I’m fairly new to this forum.

Keep your humidity up (^70%). Get a gauge to make sure your levels are accurate. Cypress mulch and sphagnum moss would be a good choice. Aspen shaving would not, because they are prone to molding when wet.

My son got one and he’s become a favorite here. The rainbow on them is amazing! Thicker then the corns we have at the same size but not as thick as the bp’s. Ours has only gotten to 3 foot so far. Big huge bird eaters, at least ours is...he ate 3 finches at only 2 foot long the day we went to bring him home from the store, and watches our conure all the time...I think he’s just waiting to get ahold of him.

Since my red tail boa does the same things I assume they are just boa traits...hanging upside down to eat, raiseing the head to check things out- it nothing to see them in the middle of nowhere with half the body up in the air. And the loveing human face thing...both the brb and rtb both will hang out in the air with their noses touching ours. Both also are more fond of rocks then hides, both will hang out on top of beside instead of under a log or cave.

High humidity is harder, I have a small area of aspen, an area of jungle bedding and an area of eco earth, letting them choose where to be. Most time is spent in the eco earth. I keep mine in the tropical range humidity- over 85 percent by spraying daily, a huge water bowl and a reptile rock fountain running all the time.
