 Selecting a (2nd) Snake

I’ve been thinking on getting a second snake. It may not be any time soon but possibly by the end of this year. I currently have a Black Mexican King snake That I love to death. I’ve been looking into boa’s and Pythons, (This will Be posted in Boas too). Just to point out I am Responsible and will Care for the snake according to it’s needs. But I have a few Requirements. Thats where you guys can help me! :) alright lets start,
1. I’m fine with feeding it Rats But I don’t want to have to feed it bunnies. So not to big around the girth.
2. It maxes out around 7-8 feet. Rather not have something 10Feet+
3. Temperaments not to big of a deal. (Just say if they tend to have a temper or not)
4. Price is, I’d like Something without an outrageously high price tag. (But Show them anyway because I might give in. )
5. I’m okay with some finicky eaters, but I’m unable to get a supply of lizards and snakes as feeders.
6. No Ball Pythons/Rosy Boas/ Kenya sand Boas.
If I think of anything else I’ll surely let you know.

If possible do list their care requirements of any snake that fits close to the things listed above.
Also I’ve read a little about Jungle Carpet Pythons, They seem to fit close to my Requirements but I’d much rather hear it from an owner of one then from a care sheet.

Thanks!

 Selecting a (2nd) Snake

Jungles are mad as! I just recently got one and she’s beautiful, very good temprament. She’s my second snake, i’ll be getting a male to breed in a few mounths.
Answer to questions.
1. They will only get up to adult rats, may only be interested in mice all their life(so get them onto rats as soon as you can), so no need for bunnies.
2. These guys only get to 7ft max.
Atherton Jungle carpet python: 6.5ft max.
Black/gold Jungle: 5ft max
Palmerstone Jungle: 4.5ft max.
3. Very good, well mine is(she’s a Atherton). Can be snappy.
4. $250+ in Aus, I don’t know the US prices.
5. Very good feeder’s
6. Any Carpet pythons are great.

Cage requirements:

Waterbowl
2-3 hides(One on warm end, another on the cold end and one up in a branch but not nessesary).
Substrate: Aspen bedding, Marine carpet, Breeder’s choice kitty litter.
A branch or 2.

The cage needs to be higher since they are semi-arboreal.

Check out the thread "My newest addition", its my atherton.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I Really Am Starting to Like The Jungle Carpets. My Question Is Tank size. Many Care sheets say 40 gallon but that seems really small to me. Would a 75 gallon be good for an adult? Or do they need bigger?

@Ned Fisch, I Saw your Post. Your snake is Beautiful!

Glass is a BIG NO NO. Im not familiar with Gallon....
A wooden enclosure with glass front about 5.5ftH, 3ftL, 70cmD would be perfect for a fully grown Carpet python.

Thanks

I would reverse those measurements a little bit, actually. Height is great, but not at the expense of length. So either something both long and tall, or somthing long and kind of tall. I’m not sure five and a half feet is necessary for a JCP, unless it’s a really huge female, but the snake certainly wouldn’t mind it, that’s for sure. Normal non-minimalist for a JCP is more like 4X2X2 for six footer.
The 75 is close, but probably not quite roomy enough. Besides the low humidity issues you’ll get with screen-over-glass, I would only be confident putting an unusually small male in somethig that size. I used to keep my carpet in one and by the time she was seven feet long it was obviously too small. Granted, she’s a coastal, not a jungle, but seven feet isn’t exactly unheard of for a jungle, either.

Alright My Next question is. Where to find those types of tanks. I’m unable to build one, Don’t have to tools nor am I good at building things. Nor do I know of anyone that could build one for me. I Don’t have much trouble keeping humidity in Screen tops. (Good ’Ol Tinfoil lol) If I Were to Find a Glass Tank with Those measurement would it work?

The humidity only needs to be 45-60%, in Aus all us Jungle owners don’t really worry about it.
A 4ftL, 3ftH, 2ftD, would be he minimum.

Okay, Good. I’ve found some cages with the right measurements, They’re a little expensive but I Expected them to be.
It opens in front instead of the top which is nice.
My Question is,
Do You Thinks Setting My Computer on top of it is going to effect any thing?
Cause the spot I can put it in my room I’d have to take out one stand that’s holding my computer (Not the monitor)
I’m not worried about the electricity, and I don’t really see how there could be a problem But I Figured I’d see what you guys think.

Keeping the cage on the floor might be a problem. A lot of snakes aren’t big fans of seeing feet stomp around them. So if you’re talking about using the cage as a table... the snake will probably just hide all the time.
If you’re talking about having the cage a few feet up, and just having the computer way up like six feet in the air, with wires running down to where your monitor and keyboard are, I guess that might not matter. To the snake, it certainly won’t. To the computer, heat rising up from the cage might be a problem, but thermal insulation in between and a decent fan ought to be enough.

I’ve Figured out a better spot for him. It’ll be at the end of my bed. I’ll try and find something to raise it up with. I was Kinda concerned about all the heat and stuff so I just found a better spot to put it in. Thanks Guy’s for your help. I’ve found a place to order a cage from, and I know a place that’ll be getting the Jungles in September, But I’ll be keeping my eyes open.
