Lucy’s Reputation. Good morning everyone, i’m the proud owner of a 7 month old lucy, and from what I have read in books tells me that my snake is "very aggressive and nippy" now from what I’ve heard from all the rest of the owners of these snakes is that they are very misunderstood, so I figure, why don’t we stop calling them the most aggressive rat snakes to try and help them beat the rap, I mean c’mon, my snake has never even looked at me weird, who’s with me! Because I know there are others out there that have had the same experince that I have had with my snake, and I think we should spread the word!

Lucy’s Reputation. I have one slightly bigger than yours and it gets handeled nearly every day. But for some reason, it decides it is time to bite me every time i pick it up (even draws blood when that small). Maybe it is just its way of saying hello.............

Yeah its a really old pick, I think she was less than 3 months old in that pic, one of these days i’m gonna have to post some new pics of her, shes less than a year old and shes already 24" long atleast and growing like a weed! Its insane how much they can grown in such a short time

Lucy’s Reputation. Texas rat snakes as a whole are more nippy and prone to bite than a lot of other species kept in the hobby. It’s just the way they are. Sort of like Coachwhips and northern water snakes but you do not see those two very often as pets. Of course with regular handling a lot will calm down but some just will not no matter how much you handle them. I think they are starting to become more calm because they are bred so widely for the pet trade. Usually the calmest pets are rasied and bred with other calmer individuals and these "traits" could be passed on.........just a theory.

Lucy’s Reputation. could be to a way of taming like other animals in captivity. temperment is a trait that can be passed on. but also as bred could be to that each generation has somethign passed down where somethign is considered normal or routine. kinda like ppls fear of spiders they know that over 50% all spider phobias people are born with and has nothign to do with being bitten by one. could be same for snakes and oveer time fears be bred out of them. dogs for example in wild wouldnt let human get within 100 feet of pups, but over time wirth breeding we became aceptable. some species may take longer for this though because of natural tempermant etc.(just my opinion mind ya)
