Ok, first of all if you don’t know how to properly sex your snakes then you should definatly not be breeding them because you obviously don’t know enough about snakes to properly incubate and take care of them, I’m not trying to sound like an egghead or anything but you should learn alot more about snakes in general before you get into breeding them for sale, buy a few books and do some research before you go any further then the drawing table on this one.

 Rat snake question

Rat snakes are by far one of the easiest snake to breed in captivity, and you by NO means have to be an expert to do it. Just research a little bit on the species you would like to breed... i.e. length and weight for breeding, gestation period, egg binding, incubation periods, etc... pick up some books and surf the web a good bit. There’s definitely a good deal of work and care involved in breeding, but if you know your stuff, it can be very, very rewarding.

 Rat snake question

Oh, and to answer your initial question... the two most accurate procedures are probing and popping. Popping, (look it up) should ONLY be done by experienced snake owners. Probing is a technique where a metal rod is inserted into the anal vent of the snake. The probe will enter the hemipenes in a male snake, and go in farther, and will go in only a short distance for females.

 Rat snake question

What species of rat snake are they? Good luck selling them all to a pet store, especially if you have around 20 of them. Rat snakes are hard to get rid of to just the general public because of the cheap priced corn morphs out there (amel, anery, ghost, okeetee etc). You find yourself stuck with a few hatchlings that no one wants to buy and you’ll most likely end up giving some of them away, not that there is anything wrong with that. I give away about %25 of my clutches to friends and young teens so as to keep the hobby alive and growing by bringing in the younger generation.

You shouldn’t be feeding every other week. A a baby should be fed every 5-7 days and actually even adult snakes also do better if fed smaller meals every week then if given larger meals spread out more.

Yeah at the rate you are feeding them they may be ready to breed in 6 years.....and the female never. Bump them up to every 4-5 days until they start taking small adult mice. Everyone is so scared now of overfeeding that they frequently do just the opposite and constantly keep their snakes hungary all the time (unintentionally).

 Rat snake question

Sorry...I gotta jump in here...

They JUST told you to feed them about every 5 days...and then you said...

"Ok...I’ll feed them every Saturday."

They NEED to be offered food every 4 - 5 days at this age.

You don’t know how to feed them properly...

You don’t know how to sex them...

How the Hell are you going to competently BREED them?!?!

I’m not trying to be a jerk here...But Dear God Kid...READ A BOOK!!!

 Rat snake question

At first you said you were feeding every other week! (About 14 days apart)

Then you were told (by two other people) to feed them about every 5 days.

And then you said..."Ok...I’ll feed them every Saturday" That is 7 days!!! Not 5 like you were advised!!!

Then I point this out to you...and now you say...

Quote:

i now feed them every 3 days 1 small rat

Are you Serious?!?!?!

Do you know that the number 14 and 7 and 3 are not the same as the number 5...?!?!?

Do you have lead paint in your house?

Because this isn’t difficult to understand.

Feed every 5 days!

And the rat should be extremely small if your snake is only as big as you said earlier.
