 Corn or Rat Snake?

hey, a while ago i went ino a shop selling mostly corns however there was one *baby* and it looked excatly like a anatheristic corn and it said so on the label so obviously i carried on looking around but i came back and noticed it was thicker and the head didnt have a pattern on it, just pure grey/black and it was wider the jaws were more rounded also. Im just confused because this isnt like any of the normal cornsnakes that i look at and it looks extremly similar to other black snakes that ive seen around ?

Yes they are both rat snakes and require very similar care. Only differences worth noting are two things:

Black rats breed much better in brumated. Corns do not have to be brumated.

Black rats are much more active and diurnal as opposed to the crepuscular corn. Because of this I would give the BR a larger enclosure with some vertical climbing opportunity.

Corns are a preticular KIND of ray snake. They were came to be known as there own species by farmers finding them in their corn fields and calling them ’red rat snake’.

Thats not scientific but thats how people noticed their difference

Billbert YOU had better do YOUR research. I have been keeping these for over 15 years. That is a black rat snake. Maybe YOU should google black rat snake hatchlings.....BTW she is getting blacker with every shed......thats how it works with black rat snakes......they do not come out of the egg black .......they hatch out with pattern to help break up their outline so as to hide from predetors until they get older.
In some states black rats keep their juvenile pattern all the way into adulthood. Here in VA they tend to turn very black. She is not even 2 yrs old yet and will get even blacker than the pic below.

Please reply.

that snake in the pic. you showed looks more like a black albino corn snake than a rat snake but that is just my opinion.

 Corn or Rat Snake?

It’s the same snake in every pic (all 4).............as hatchlings black rat snakes superfically resemble anery corn snakes. Remember there are a lot of snakes that look different as hatchlings than they do as adults. Her picture is A LOT different now. She is an almost solid black black rat snake.

If you were to place a black rat hatchling next to an anery corn (black albino corn) you would be able to see a lot of differences.

Angelsmother - you need to google black rat snake hatchlings and compare. The snake pictured’s gravid mother was wild caught here in Virginia.............way out of emori range, not to mention she is jet black. Yes I am very aware of what GPR’s look like. I have 6 of them as well. If you place hatchling GPR’s next to hatchling BR’s then you can see the difference.
