Baby rat snake help!! i recently found a rat snake in my backyard about 8 to 12 inches in length. Id like to make it my pet but it seems to love to strike my fingers. this isn’t a problem right now but when its 6 foot long and has teeth it will matter. so do u think the snake will grow out of this biting problem as it grows up around humans? and Wat will a rat snake this size eat?

Baby rat snake help!! Some WC’s will tame down. Some don’t. I would spend several times a week (avoid around the feeding schedule) handling it. At this point, as you said, it won’t hurt you if it bites. So this is the time to see if it’ll calm down. Regular (GENTLE) handling should make it more tolerant towards you as it will not associate you with danger. Sometimes this takes a long time... sometimes it doesn’t. It really depends on the individual snake. Some are just downright ornery! LOL.
Good luck!

Baby rat snake help!! Crickets are a big no. They really don’t supply the nutrition a small rat snake needs. Small pinkies would work. Then, as the snake grows larger, you’d feed larger mice accordingly.

Baby rat snake help!! Long story, but I found a baby black rat snake last winter and kept it until late spring (and after its 1st shed) when I let it go...
I offered it crickets for quite a while and it never even looked at them. I eventually brought it a small pinkey and its hunt instinct took over and it ate it right away. It was actually really neat to see!
Anyway, I am certainly not an expert in any way but I can tell you that from my experience, the rat snake didn’t even look at the crickets and from the 1st time I offered a pinkie - it was all over it.
Good luck!

Baby rat snake help!! i have never heard of any snake, eccept for the green snake family and rarely the garter snake family, that eats insects.all ratsnakes eat bird chicks, bird eggs, birds, mice, voles, rats, and sometimes lizards.never crickets or any insect.
