My snake laid eggs??? I have had a great plains rat snake for 4-5 years and thought his name was King. I got home from work yesterday and found she was a Queen. There were 18 eggs in her cage. How can this happen after so many years with me? Is this normal and will she do it again? How often can this happen? Thanks for any and all responses. Cindi

My snake laid eggs??? Was she ever intoduced to a male? It has happened before that female snakes will spontaneously lay eggs with out ever breeding. This is called parthogenesis. This happens when ovum turns into eggs without fertilization. This is mostly seen with insects.
A lot of females will retain sperm from breedings of the previous year but 4 to 5 years seems unlikely.
Most of the time when you have parthogenesis none of the eggs survive or are not viable to begin with. There have been a few rare cases of these type of eggs hatching so it doesn’t hurt to try and incubate them.
Can you post pics of the eggs?

My snake laid eggs??? I distroyed the eggs because the local pet shop said they weren’t viable. She laid 18 of them. The only other snake around has no physical contact with her. He is a California King and in an aquarium next to her. She has been refusing food until I fed her live pinky mice last night. I appreciate the response. I will have to watch to see if it ever happens again. I was so shocked when I saw this in her aquarium. The most amazing thing I have ever experienced. ( And I have seen alot)
