Description please pics welcome too Rat snakes are smart. If every time they hiss or strike, people flinch away, that reinforces the habit. When you take out a nervous snake, you shouldn’t only hold it for a minute or two, nor should you "play with it," changing hand positions around often and such. You should find a way it’s comfortable, often elevated above you, and just let it be comfortable on you for as long as possible. Your goal isn’t to be an exciting treadmill; it’s to be a nice boring tree. You convince them you’re harmless by acting harmless, not by acting either intimidated or like you want to hug them and squeeze them and name them George.
On the other hand...
Rat snakes are stupid. If when they’re thinking "Boy, I hope somebody opens this cage and gives me a mouse," you come along and open the cage, they just might strike first and ask questions later.
Which one does it look like?

Description please pics welcome too hey JackAsp thank you for your reply. I have not yet seen this snake I was told however that it is like a golden and brownish color. I never had a rat snake though I’ve had a few balls and a king and a sinaloan milk. the main reason I’m taking the rat is because I can provide better living conditions for the animal ie. The proper size enclosure and uv lighting; which the animal has none at this time. I just can’t see a four foot snake being kept in a 10 gallon tank. I would imagine that might be contributing to the aggressive behavior. I know when I feel cramped I tend to get moody, so I can only assume this snake may be feeling it too. Also I have read that rat snakes need uv lighting because they are active during both day and night. I also heard they like to climb a little as well so I set up the enclosure with some climbing material. I set my enclosure up over the weekend so that I can make sure the temp. gradient and humidity levels are adjusted properly. I am letting the enclosure empty untill saturday the 12th of july, then I’ll be getting the snake.
