Black Snake myth
Where I come from a ’Black Snake" is the Black Rat Snake. All My life and continuing to even today I was and have been told "Black Snakes aren’t piosonous, but if they bite you, they will make you so sick you will wish you were dead." Were does this come from? Is this myth (I’m pretty sure it’s a myth) found elswhere outside the confines of my locale? Is this something that everyone believes and tells in other states as well? Where I live, besides the Timber Rattler and Copperhead, the Black Snake is the most dangerous and feared snake. EVERYONE wants to kill them. Even seemingly intelligent people believe they will make you REALLY sick if you get bitten. I never really believed it myself, common sense just wouldn’t let me (and I have never clamed to have much of that), but now that I have one as a friend and I’ve been researching it’s care, it really seems utterly ridiculous to even consider something like that being true. I have been bitten so many times when I used to "hunt" snakes when I was a child, (and I do mean CHILD. I was probably 8-12 yrs old), by so many different kinds of snakes, (but never a Black Snake), and still never got sick. There probably still aren’t any snakes in that hollow. Not that I was afraid of them, I just didn’t like, (or maybe I was facinated by them, and just didn’t know how to show it). Then there was the time my Mom caught me playing with a Garter Snake in the back seat of the car after we came from a visit to my Uncle’s farm. I carried it in my pocket. NO-PUN INTENDED, it’s true. She made me let it go. Anyway I never really believed that myth was true, and the only conclusion that I can come up with is that Black Snakes are like a Komodo Dragons and have large amounts of bacteria in their mouths and use it to infect you so you will die latter and they can hunt you down to eat you. ROFLMAO That’s how bad it is around here anyway. My questions are; Where does this myth come from? How can I HELP change the attitude and beliefs of people that have been brought up this way so the senseless killing of these wonderfull creatures will stop? I mean, I grew up and realized that snakes aren’t dangerous evil things on my own, despite what I was taught. It’s not that I want to go State wide with a "Save the Black Snake" campain, but just TODAY when I told a friend that I had a Black Snake he said that same thing, and we both know people who keep snakes as pets, like Boas and Pythons. When I told him that wasn’t true, I could feel the upset he had right through the phone. How dare I not believe him. Wasn’t I taught that too? It’ s common knowledge ya know. Fred |
