No Light for Rat Snake
The Bearded Dragon has his light on most of the day into the night. I’m wondering.... Do I need to have the light on the snakes aquarium during the day if the room stays 80 degrees or more ? I’m thinking that it’s HOT enought.... BUT does he need the actual light? Please let me know if you have an opinion, as I’m new to the snake ownership. . Thanks... |

Quote: Just keep in mind full spectrum bulbs might darken your snake or harm its skin because of the lack of melanin.
Snakes have plenty of melanin. Hence the terms hypomelanistic (greatly reduced melanin), amelanisitc (lack of melanin) etc. All of these are terms used to desrcibe abnormal genetics. Normal genetics or what is seen in normal wild type looking snakes are normal amounts of melanin. When you say lack of melanin this implies that the snake is an amel or albino. UVB has no effect on rat snakes one way or the other. It is not needed for health but at the same time does no harm either. |
