Where did the eggs come from?

i’ve had a rat snake for 5 years. It has just shed its skin and also has produced 2 eggs. bit confused cause it has never done this before and we thought it was male. any suggestions why it has done this? there is no possibility of mating with another snake!

Here is my resonse to a similar post of few post down.

Was she ever intoduced to a male? It has happened before that female snakes will spontaneously lay eggs with out ever breeding. This is called parthogenesis. This happens when ovum turns into eggs without fertilization. This is mostly seen with insects.

A lot of females will retain sperm from breedings of the previous year but 4 to 5 years seems unlikely.

Most of the time when you have parthogenesis none of the eggs survive or are not viable to begin with. There have been a few rare cases of these type of eggs hatching so it doesn’t hurt to try and incubate them.

Can you post pics of the eggs?
