QUESTIONS- old world rats = ridleyi

hello everyone. i have 1.1 cb ’08 ridleyi, 1.0 just under 5ft and 0.1 just under 4ft, that are totally unrelated. i have 2 questions about the female. i suppose experience from other old world rats such as the beauties could be used here since they are very similar. these are my first o.w.r.

first of all, any idea of why she musks? she is out of the nippy stage but still musks every time i pic her up. is musking a normal thing for ridleyi? i don’t think the male ever has musked.

second, concerns her muscle tone and strength. ever since i got her she seems like she doesn’t have as much power and strength as the male. she looks healthy and pounds every mouse that comes into sight and is relatively active. it’s just a drastic change from holding the male and her. if it were in human terms, it would be like he feels like he could bench press 400lbs and she could barely lift the bar. that make any sense???

looking for experience and or feedback. thanks...

jonathan

Musking, I do not belive, is all that common of a defence for most any ratsnake. Though it does happen. Its nothing to worry about.

I’m not quite sure what to say. I have some snakes that pound mice like crazy and still appear to be very light or weak feeling. I don’t think its a problem. And also since the snake is much smaller than the other, it would logically follow there would be some diference.

thanks for the feedback. she is actually a couple months younger than the male which probably counts for some of the size difference. they strength, or lack of it, isn’t related to the size. in my opinion. she seriously feels weak for her size. she just feels kind of weak, which i have always associated with a sick animal. she has been like that since being a hatchling though and seems to be growing and feeding normally. it’s a new one for me.....

If you feed live you can see their real strength. Feeding is when their muscles spring into action and, as they are well designed to do, kill their prey with great force... on the other hand some snake muscles relax when they are being held well.
I’ve always noticed females of to some extent to be more relaxed in the hands of people then the males (tense and haste in slithering through fingers and such).
All that very well might not be the case, however I don’t think its anything to worry about... some snakes may just be built a little different than others. For instance, I have a male emoryi ratsnake that is extremely stronger than any other I have... and thats just the way it is.
