Pine wood shavings: Go? No Go?

I’ve read a lot on the Net that Pine and Cedar wood shavings are a no go for snakes as substrates. However, I’ve come across a few who mentioned that Pine is okay but not Cedar.

Just want to ask the experienced Ratsnake keepers here (esp. those of the Asian variety)...would you advise/advise against Pine shavings? THanks.

No Go - Against. ....... I’ll ring in on what I know and have read here and on other Rat Snake sites. Every site I’ve been to says "Don’t use pine or cedar shaving", it’s got something to do with the oils they give off that can cause problems and even death in any type of Rat Snake. I use cypress mulch, it works well, my snake likes to get down in the mulch and hide. Plus, it only cost me $2.00 for 40 lbs. But, I have a Black Rat and not an Asian, so maybe someone with an Asian will respond. I’m 99% sure the answer will be the same.

I would say not to use them, especially if you house in plastic boxes. Pine oil is an aromatic phenolic compound & is toxic but less so than cedar oil. Many people have used pine with no known effects. I use aspen, cypress mulch or just plain old newspaper. My herp vet prefers Carefresh for all types of herps. If you loke to have fun, Carefresh now comes in colors!

nagah, I would advise you not to use pine or cedar for your rat snakes. I only use newspaper and sometimes paper towels in my corn snake cages .
