Rat pups due in a week.

I’ve got two batches of cookies baking for about another week.

They are rex x normal. The male is the rex in both litters. This will be the first litter for both moms. I’m hoping they will do great and not cause problems.

These will be my 14th and 15th litters in the whole year that I’ve been breeding rats.

I’ve always wondered what the moms and paws were called- Sires and Dams?

Hello, Can’t wait to see your babies when they get here be sure to post pics! :D also I wouldn’t worry about the moms being first timers... in my experience that just means a smaller litter (usually not always)... Rats are known for being excellent moms... unlike mice and some types of hamsters... :D Good luck!

I agree with Rebecca, they should be fine. I’ve breed one rat, YAY FOR ME!!!!!!!!!, but I have a 2 quick questions. You see, my rat, Daisy, is still with her babies, just the females and not nursing anymore, but lately, she’s been a little "touchy." She’s not as friendly as she use to be and a little less caring. I KNOW it’s from either giving birth, or just the babies because ever since she gave birth, she’s been like this! So, will this go away and why is she like this? PLEASE TELL ME!!!!! I WISH SHE WILL JUST BE HER OLD SELF AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

I have known rats to be "mean" for two reasons (specially moms) they either get that way because the cage is too crowded... which im sure you would know if thats the case OR depending on the pups age she could be weaning them... or trying to.... if shes just being touchy with you it could be that shes being protective of her babies.... which is known to happen... and this is just something your going to have to work with her on.... keep giving her love and attention and she will eventually get over it... but the key is you HAVE TO work with her otherwise she wont get any better and may get worse about it... first time moms tend to be extra protective of their babies... even if they have been with you forever and a day and trust you.... so good luck!

OMG!!! Thanx!!!! I gave 5 babies to petco so now there are only 5 in her cage (which is perfect cause they’re pretty small) and she is A LOT more lovable to me now. Thank you soooooooo much!!!!

How old are those pups?

Maybe you were giving her too much attention.

I’ve encountered that problem a few times and I just let the mom have her space. Everyting turned out just fine.

PS How animal-friendly is your Petco. Big pet stores usually have to many animals to pay special attention to individuals so those pups most likely aren’t getting the proper care they need.

Just a suggestion: DO NOT give rats to petstores. They could end up neglected, as snake food(which isn’t terrible BTW), or in a scientific research laboratory- where they TORTURE animals to death needlessly!

Mine are 6 1/2 weeks old. The Petco by my house is awesome! They take such good care of their animals. It’s pretty small though. But they put my rats up to be sold as PETS, not snake food. They make sure that they aren’t snake food just as good as I would. And around here, they don’t test chemicals on animals. Daisy is A LOT better though, now that less babies are in the cage. I guess she was just tired from the constant babies trying to play with her.

I’m glad your Daisy is doing great.

I’m also sorry to disagree with the snake food comment because snakes are animals that need food just like humans and any other animal on this planet.

Pet stores are rarely concerned with the well-being of their animals. They are more concerned about making money.

I totally agree!!!!! I love snakes and want a Mexican Rosy Boa, and yes, they eat pinkies. At the pet store that I live by, only about two people that work there care about the pay. The rest just LOVE the pets! They will bring their pets to work and have them on their shoulder! And I thank you for your concern about my rat.

I’m glad you have a great petstore. We have to drive almost an hour to get to a pet store and with gas prices...
That’s why I began breeding rats- for my 3 snakes. It seems so terrible and it really is.

LOL I have never been in a pet store where they actually ASK if you are buying a rat for food or a pet. I just recently began breeding.. and I just so happened to pick out dumbo rats.. don’t even know how important that is... they are going to be food for the 2 red tail boas and 1 ball python I have. I am also getting 6 Ball pythons this week. Ariana... if you do get a snake.. they only take pinkies if that is the size of their girth.. (biggest part of their body) and pinkies would only apply to baby snakes... the prey grows with the snake.. as I’m sure you are aware. I just had this awful image in my head of you feeding this 2 foot boa pinkies lol... anyway I’m trying to pay attention and get some pointers on breeding my lil dumbo friends ( my 12 year old is now quite attached) and I’m really interested to see if you do get a snake... be sure to post pics!
