I’ve heard of this, but haven’t tried it.

Do you know what effect the vinegar has on the rodent? Because I’d rather have healthy rats than pleasant-smelling cages any day.

Also to reduce the stench, clean the cage more often so the build-up isn’t so bad.

Phnemonia or Ammonia?

I also heard that putting a couple drops of the artificial vanilla will also reduce the smell as well. This I have tried and does work but it doesn’t eliminate the smell.

viniger does eliminate the smell and it doesn’t really hurt the mouse or rat, but only use a half a table spoon. And yes i have tried it.

To Begin with, they don’t smell that bad..Cleaning once a week insures that they don’t smell that much anyway...So even if vinegar, vanilla do work, they’re not going to matter much if you don’t keep them clean.

Just stopped in to read this. Wouldn’t 1/2 tbsp be proportionate to how much water you’re giving them? Seems like you would need a ratio instead of a set volume.

I have heard of doing the same but using vanilla extract instead.

1/2 to mouse, hampster, gerbel, bottle and 1 to rat, rabbit, chinchilla bottles. I obtained the info form a breeder and my vet okayed it. They don’t really stop to smell and the viniger smell should be to strong if you only use a tiny bit.

having tried a cup of water with a teaspoon of vinegar in it, i can tell you that it gave me a horrible horrible stomache ache and tasted NASTY.. if i had no other option, would i drink it? yea, but given the choice, id say just give them clean water, with a little vanilla in it to help wth odor.

If you have 1-2 cages sure once a week would be great but it still will not knock the smell down to that extreme. If you are breeding in 10+ cages you would have no life to be able to keep on top of cleaning these cages 52 times a year especially with 4 females to each cage having 10+ babies each. Vanilla and vinegar will both work but just use very small amounts and maybe every other bottle. Vinegar is great for humans, I take a tablespoon every morning and it has reduced my heartburn dramatically. Sawdust is a good substrate and helps cut down on the smell as well. As far as the part that mice don’t smell that bad?? Try having a wife with a sensitive nose. I can clean the cage and water bottle and that day she will smell them when I open the door to the breeder room. lol Good luck everyone
