UGH!!!! this is so hard!!! my kids are trying to keep them ALL!!! LOL im too easy to persuade....EEK!!

its going to be so hard to give them up. its the very first time having a litter, besides dogs and cats.

how do you tell the gender? i have an idea, but want to be sure to keep 1 of each for the parents.

heres the closest i could get to gender shot. its fuzzy, but they wouldnt be still lol...

what do i look for?

That one looks like a boy to me.... but hard to tell with pics! basically the best I can do to explain it is with a male the two places where he poops/pees are farther apart and in rats that age you can almost see the testicles... however I know there are places online with visual aids if you look hard enough... if i find one ill send it to ya :)

at the size they are now you could probably fit I would say 5 or 6 of them comfortably in a 20l but probably not for longer than a month or so, they grow fast! If I were you I would build a big rattie cage for them :) I would take one or two but unfortunately they grow into rats lol and im only allowed mice at the moment :(

i wish i knew how to build one. and had the time and money. i have a rabbit in a wire cage. she is getting too big for it though and hates being in it. so, i want to do something about that. i was thinking of putting mama in with a couple of females in their and a male in with dad. and the rest, i guess are going to the pet store :( its so hard to part with them. its bad enough though that i am keeping 3 instead of 2 now . i am such a sucker. and these babies are so easy to socialize at this young age. they come right up to me when i stick my hand in the cage. and the little white one that im keeping just sits in my hand so still! some of the others are not like that. they have lots of energy and are "wild" little ones....

Thats awesome that your keeping 3 :) uhm as for cage ideas theres great cages and ideas for rat cages on www.ratfanclub.org its run by our local rat lady :) shes awesome one of her cages is made out of one of those kiddie pools and some mesh wire its cool! If I had the space (and was allowed to have ratties) I would totally make one! Have you tried finding homes for them on Cragslist? That usually works out ok for me ;) GL!

I dont know that she would take them but she might know someone whos looking... she helped my friends mom rehome her two rats (they were SOOO CUTE) to a lady with an older male rat that was paralyzed in the hind legs (and neutered), she had to get rid of them cause she was ill :( I still say you post like crazy on craigslist! :)

LOL i better do something!! i keep adding to my "keeping this one too" list lol...... they are so sweet!! one, a tiny one, just sits on my shoulder and goes to sleep. these guys are so socialized! i would for them to go to the pet store to become food for the snakes!!!! even though, i know thats all natural.....
