Mice or no mice that is the question

i am also a beginner at this. except mine are rats. i dont know if theres a difference.

i, or my rats recently had a litter. the pups are 4 weeks old now. i was going to breed for food for my water dragon, but couldnt do it! they were too cute lol.... then again, im a rat person.

i can give some advise on this from what everyone else told me. at least until someone else comes around.

you just want to make sure you separate the parents after shes bred. id have to look through my posts to see when they told me how to tell when shes bred. if they have been together for a week already, chances are shes preggers. it will then only take a month for you to notice that she is and will deliver any day.....someone please correct me if im wrong.

if they are already together, then i would go ahead and separate them. if you wait and she is, he will just harrass her the whole time to breed and it will stress her out. i found out the hard way.

i put mine together and left them, not knowing how long it would take. id say about a month and picked her up to find her belly bulging with babies. he was being so mean about the breeding thing and she was getting mad, squeeking, fighting him off, running from him... so i took him out and an hour latered she delivered. i guess she was trying to have them and he was making it impossible. they are perfectly fine and happy on their own now. the babies are healthy and huge!! she had 16.

sorry if i rambled, as i tend to...just wanted to give you my experience. hope it helped. gl....you can go check out my posts for the info they gave me on the small animals forum. just scroll down.

Mice or no mice that is the question

thanks for the info. greatly needed! i ran into a problem last night. i introduced 2 new males into my comunity. and my original white mouse and my new black mouse wouldnt stop attacking/harrassing my gray and white one... so i seperated them. one of them got pretty badly biten. so i need to get a new tank. or two. any suggestions on how to make them more at ease?

Mice or no mice that is the question

I pretty much agree with the pp except to say that I dont seperate my mice... I have run into some issues with the parents not getting along upon being re-introduced and I just dont risk it anymore... unlike rats the chances of dad killing the litter to breed mom again are really slim... however there are people out there who seperate their females because it is rather hard on mice (or any other living thing) to keep having babies back to back to back etc etc so its really a personal choice... as for your male problem... thats because if you add more than 1 male to a bunch of females they will fight over the breeding rights... I suggest you just set up 3 different colonies (1 per male), also when introducing a new mouse to any colony reguardless of sex its best to have just completely scoured the cage gl!

Mice or no mice that is the question

i thank you for your info./ advice. i went out and bought each male his own cage. got kind of expensive but it was worth not seeing a death of a mouse . but i have yet another question... if i switch the males out per breeding will the females alow that? or just neglect the new males?

You wouldnt have a very good breeding season if you did that... less you moved the females from cage to cage or really really cleaned the other each time to ensure the smell of the previous male was gone very little breeding is likely to happen... In my experience if you are going to move anyone move the females to the males cage and allow him time in between cleanings to get the cage saturated in his musk... if the females get to it first they will then be the dominate ones and probably wont breed well... GL I would also like to state that males usually get along as long as there are no females present.. but im glad you got them their own cages... that way theres no way they will fight :)

well assuming the two "spare" males are not related to the one with the females you could always save a few females from the litters and set up two extra groups. GL with your mice I hope you get lotsa babies soon :)
