 !!!!!!!Tail!!!!!!!!H

My rat’s tail was injured and i don’t know what to do. It fell off my bed and got stuck on something. It’s tail was degloved. 4 inches of skin was ripped off. I put it in a big box without cage mates and put a towel in the bottom of it. I put food and water with her and a tissue box for her to sleep in. I cleaned it with bandaid infection protection foam and then i put polysporin on it and wrapped it in gauze. If there’s anyone who can tell me what to do please help me!!!!!

sounds like you did everything right thus far... keep her really clean, if anything looks like it needs stitches, gets infected, doesnt heal at all in the next two days or starts to turn black I would get her to a vet otherwise just keep doing what your doing!

 Tail!!!!!!!!Help!

I’m taking her to a vet tomorrow.
I hope she’s going to be OK. I’v been changing her bandages every 3 hours or so. She squeaks a lot when i do but it keeps falling off so i have to replace it. Does anybody know what to do to make it stay on? i thought it might help to put something that tastes bad (non-toxic) on the outside of the bandage to keep her from chewing it off. Would that work?

Put something on it to make her not chew it, such as a chemical, but make sure it’s not toxic.

Im not sure there is anything that you can do to keep her from chewing on it... people dont generally put bandages on their rats for the reason that they chew.... as long a you keep putting neosporin on it or somehing like that you should have no problem with infection.... but if you feel its necessary ask the vet

 Tail!!!!!!!!Help!

once my daughter, when she was about 5 yo, snuck and got our rat out. he was a baby and she grabbed him by the end of the tail and pulled about 1/4 inch off the end. i called the vet and they told me it should be fine. to stop bleeding, stick the end in baking soda. and to find the joint nearest to where the skin was and clip it with steril scissors. it just broke my heart, but had to be done. they didnt see rats at this vet or i would have taken him in. and i didnt think vets saw rats at the time anyway. everything turned out ok and it healed good. i only had to put the polysporin on once and didnt wrap it.

i think they heal themselves pretty much. just make sure the bedding and cage is clean, i think. i think it being open, it will clot easier too.
