 New hammy - any advice?

Hey guys. :)

I’m a first-time hammy owner. The little one’s name is Pip, Pipsqueak, Pippy, whatever has to do with Pip. (He’s too young for an exact gender, however.) I’ve done research on feeding habits, behavior, etc, but I think I can use a bit more advice for my hammy. Any tips? Specifically, any information on feeding would help greatly. (We forgot to buy food when at the pet store! DOY!) He is currently eating little bits of cherry, milk-soaked-whole-grain bread, romaine lettuce and cheese. (I was sure to introduce these slowly and one at a time. The pet store didn’t feed them much more then lab blocks.)

Forgot to add - my hammy was used to drinking out of a water dish at the pet store. I would prefer if he drank out of the water bottle I have for him, because water dishes are nutorious for tipping. He doesn’t seem too interested in the bottle itself, but goes crazy whenever I get water on my finger and licks it off. Any suggestions to bottle-train?
