 And that makes 29

Jasmine gave birth today, but she seems uninterested in her babies, she hasnt tried to nurse them or keep them warm (they were freezing when we found them) so we decide to see if Mia would take them, her four babies were a lot larger than Jasmines, but it makes 12 in total with Mia’s four and Jasmines 8, so she should be able to care for them. We managed to get her to take them without killing any or neglecting any, they are now being fed and cared for, Jasmine seems fine, I put her in with Naomi and her babies (which are three days from 3 weeks and are already eating solid food), they tried to nurse from Jasmine, but no luck, even when she sat still they couldn’t latch onto a nipple, which makes me glad we put the babies with Mia. I feel sorry for Mia just like when Naomi had to get used to nursing so many babies, I was only hoping to make an even number between Jasmine and Mia, but Jasmine was still not interested no matter what and I didnt want the babies to die from being so cold.

Naomi seems to be "enjoying" herself as her little ones still nurse from her, as big as they are getting it must be annoying to her, as they run around the cage after her.

Is there any reason why Jasmine was neglecting her babies?

Is this Jasmine’s first litter? Sometimes new mothers don’t quite "click" with all the behavior patterns needed for successful maternity. Possibly her next litter will trigger the full maternal response.

As far as I know I think both Jasmine and Naomi have never had babies, Mia was one of the larger rats I got at the pet store, so I don’t quite know how old she is. We waited for Naomi forever, She was at least 4 weeks of age when we got her. Mia is still taking care of the babies, but I still hope Jasmine doesn’t feel "lonely" she seems to enjoy Naomi’s litter piled on top of her, and they like it too.

In the 9 rats I breed this has happened with 3 first litters. I just cull them and use them as pinkies although if you don’t ave anything to feed them off to that might be an issue.
