 Mice Mites/Lice???

Hi, I really need some help, PLEASE... :-(
I just found my colonies infested with bugs.
What causes them to get these bugs? (mites or lice, not sure.. white and black bugs) Could they have them at the pet store before I get them?
What can I do to prevent them from getting these bugs?? What can I do to kill them?

I have completely gone through all cages, cleaned w/bleach solution etc... Had to "Bug Bomb" 1 room like 2-3 times each encounter. These things just won’t die.
This is the 3rd time that I lost my entire collection of rats & mice, 30 - 50 each time...

I am on the edge of losing my mind... aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.............. Damn.......

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated...

Thnx,

Jeremy

Hmm. If you’ve been bug bombing your house I would guess they’re not coming from it, so they could be coming from the pet store. My next guess would be their bedding. What are you using, and where do you keep it? If you kept a large bag of shavings in the garage or basement you could be picking up buggers there.

I’m not too familiar with bugs on rodents, but I’m sure someone else can be of more help. Hope you get things sorted out!

I had to Google this; fortunately this has not been a problem for my mice. I have about 60 adult mice and a bunch of babies.
I hope you are able to solve this problem. Thank you for posting it and making me aware of this potential hazard to my own colony.

 Mice Mites/Lice???

Thanx greatballzofire that’s a big help..
I just don’t know how they got them, I cleaned the cages extremely well after the last issue. And it’s been a while since then. I put them all outside till I can figure out how to handle it. I just hate to see them all die for nothing.

I lost a Ball Python, and my 1.1 Anery Corns last year from these things.

I am thinking these bugs are surviving in the walls, basement or crawl space of your home. Even though you kill the ones on the animals or in the tubs or tanks, the population is replenished by new ones coming from places the bug bomb doesn’t reach. Hiring a professional exterminator might be a good move.
I use permethrin spray on areas not inhabited by my animals, like on the floor, ect. This is sold as Equate Bedding Spray from Walmart or Provent a Mite, both .50%. The Walmart product is easier to find. Don’t spray it on the animals, though. This prevents the new bugs from re-invading.
Use ivectomin for the mice and Reptile Relief for the reptiles.

This is a prime reason why you should quarantine all new animals coming into your collections..... know its to late for you now, but remember next time..............

Your best bet would be to get rid of all of your rodents for while then start over fresh............

Iv’e been doing this for a many years and never had problems like this till last year...

ALL of my rodents were in a seperate room, and were in seperate cages.. I got them all at the same time and was tryin 2 build up stock....This was a "Start over" attempt after the last issue.. Months after.

The problem is I don’t want these things infesting my house. I’m trying 2 get rid of them.. Also tryin to save what mice I can, if possible...
I am planning on throwing out ALL of the cages I have been using for them...

Thanks,

Jeremy

What sort of cages are you using? If they have any wood or crevices hard to clean that would be harboring the eggs of the pests, maybe that is how the infestation is persisting. I use sterilite tubs for my mice and gopher snakes, and glass tanks for my kings, all of which can be washed thoroughly. Could you post a photo of your cages and room? That would be helpful in trying to figure out what is going on.
I would take all the animals out of the room, spray permethrin (Equate Bedding Spray) heavily in the room, let the room air out, put the new cages in, with the mice treated with the Ivermectin.

I’m a little puzzled as to what killed your three snakes. Mouse lice wouldn’t kill snakes. Mites would.
I use Reptile Relief (probably already mentioned that) on my reptiles every time I get a new one and when I do the routine cage and tub cleaning.

 Mice Mites/Lice???

My Rodents "were" in glass aquariums, in a seperate room from my Reptiles.
Like I said, I’m gonna just get rid of all my current rodent tanks and start fresh..(using tubs) they could be the cause of the re-occurances..
My Reptiles are mainly in tubs. A couple in breeder tanks..
Got some permethrin spray yesterday & Ivermectin, going 2 get permethrin bug bombs today to do the room that had the rodents.
I DO quarantine all new animals and use reptile relief on all of my reptiles, plus use Provent a Mite on all cages after cleanings.

Thanx for your help,

Jeremy

You should be able to sterilize the glass aquariums. They themselves can be sprayed with Pyrethrins, then washed. Water bottles, bedding, Yada yada...Im sure you are far too familiar with the drill than you’d like to be. OOOh...You can add lavender to your mouse bedding. Makes em smell terrific, and is a deterrent for mites and lice in humans...Bet it works for the mice too. Cant hurt, and is even edible for mice.

When I taught preschool years ago we got a resistant strain of lice in our class. Even the prescription pyrethrins weren’t working. Had to bag up every soft toy, wash every bit of bedding, spray all the beds, carpets ...everything. One of our parents who was a nurse told us the only thing that worked for her child was to coat its head with olive oil mixed with one teaspoon Rosemary and one teaspoon Lavender extract. Leave on over night, brush with the nit comb to get it all off, then shampoo the oil out of the hair. Then they used a small amount of Lavender in the kids hair to keep it from recurring. Man, we spent months trying to get rid of them. Finally worked with the old time cure.

And, you never want to feed pyrethren/ Ivomectrin treated mice to a snake. It can cause neurological damage to them.

I’m not talking to you like your stupid....
But on the floor, If you have as much experience a you say, it should never have happened to you.....You obviously didn’t quarantine....
I’m not meaning anything by, just saying, being very nice..:)

And like every one has said. there’s no point in trashing your tanks, just clean them...............

Fairy Frog Mother,
Thanks for your advice. I’ll try the Lavender.
How safe is Ivermectin treated mice? The same as Ivomectrin? I’m not to familiar with either one. never had to use them before.

Thanks,

Jeremy

I got a funny mental picture of our pest plagued member Disturbed_duo trying to shampoo the oil out of all his mice! Maybe the snakes would like olive oil and lavender flavored mice? LOL!
