 Separation

At what point should I separate my little mice? I ended up with 2 boys and one girl, and they’ll be 5 weeks old tomorrow. They’re doing wonderful, and I’d hate to end up losing the girl because she gets pregnant too early. I read somewhere that they didn’t mature until 6 weeks, so am I still in the clear? Here they are:

And here is dad, getting comfortable with my new mothers-to-be.

 Separation

I’ve never had to separate because I freeze mine, but I would separate now to be on the safe side. I wouldn’t risk getting her pregnant. Good Luck!

I’m going to get her out asap, I was just wondering if I should already be expecting trouble ahead at this point. Hopefully not! And I freeze mine too, just not until they get nice and big. :)

I myself have never had a female get pregnant before about 8wks... and it was an accident of course... but breeders and other mice people tend to recomend that you seperate males and females as soon as they are weaned because the females can get pregnant as young as 5wks... but like i said i have never had this happen... and dont know anyone who has

You did good with raising these orphaned babies!

Your photos are extra cute. My camera is in the repair shop so I will have to wait to post some photos of my mice. With my third generation I’ve got some beautiful coat patterns. I have an especially handsome black and white spotted male who’s marking are symmetrical and very vivid.

I sort my litters into male tubs and female tubs at about 5 weeks old, then recheck at 6 weeks, just in case I made a mistake. I’ve only once had an early pregnancy, but I harvested all the pinks and the female has continued to be a good producer. At 8 to 10 weeks they are old enough to commence breeding. I like them to put on some size first before going through the travails of pregnancy, so I usually start them at about 10+ weeks.

Thanks! I’m glad at least 3 made it.

Awww! Are you sure you don’t want to ship me some? ;)

Ok, so I should still be good. I’ll go ahead and get them separated. All of my babies are headed for the freezer so I’m not planning on breeding them, I just wondered if she was likely to be pregnant already.

Thanks guys!
