 Fires in my comunity tank.

Here are some pictures of my fire salamanders that live in my Corucia Zebrata cage.

Here is the cage(the salamanders live in the mossy area underneath the plant)

And the salamanders

And here are the two cage mates
(Malaysian leaf frog)

The cage looks nice but it is not a good Idea to mix species together

Well seeing as all the animals were captive bred, there is plenty of space in the cage, and that all the animals inhabit different niches in the cage, I see no fault in housing these particular species together.
Now, if I had housed a different combination of species that would interact with each other, I would see how you could be concerned. But I picked these animals carefully for this tank, and having assesed the risk, I feel that they are safe from harm.

I would still be a littlke skeptical due to the fact that the monkey tailed skink comes from the Solomon Islands, The leaf frog comes from South east asia, and the fire sal comes from the deciduous forests of Europe.

Also, Most of those animals are pricy so I wouldnt be happy If there was a death due to stress form the other inhabitants

As I stated before, the animals are never in contact with each other so stress from cage mates is very unlikely.
And yes, the animals were fairly expensive so losing one would be a great loss but all the areas in which they inhabit have been "formatted" to meet that species needs(humidity, temperature, etc.).
Now, usually I would be with you 100% about not mixing species. However, when taking the proper precautions it can be done with little stress on any of the inhabitants. With my research and expirience with reptiles and amphibians I am able to do this, as would many others if they just took the time to do it right.

Hi Murhpyman !

Excuse me,but Iam very concerned reading this...

Fire-Salamanders like cold and dark wooden areas...
They are active at night and sometimes at day, when it is raining.
They don`t like temperatures over 20°C !!!!
They need no light at their enclousere...
They need cold, fresh water and the water must be changed every day...
They like rotten woodpieces to hide during daytime...
Rotten woodpieces are very important, because they have exactly the moisture, the salamanders need...
Please use earth from the forest to fill in the cage....
Fire-Salamanders are very toxic and other animals don`t like them...
They need hibernation from October till March...
Please don`t feed them in the last two weeks before starting hibernation
Temperature during hibernation :5-7°C !!!
So,you need a cold room to hibernate them...

Please feel free to get more informations-I would like to help you...

Here is a foto from a natural habitat in Germany :

Kind regards...

20 degrees is not that cold for salamanders, many species prefer temperatures of 10-15 C (50 - 60F).

When animals are captive-bred, they do not hibernate.
I could be wrong.
But bunnies don’t hibernate captive-bred.
Lizards don’t in captivity.

But, again, I could be wrong.

All captive-bred salamandra salamandra sp. need hibernation !
That`s just a genetic question...
Without this very important hibernation, they only will live for a few years.
The oldest captive-bred Fire-Salamander I know was 56 years old.

you dont need to hibernate salamanders, instead you just have them at a cooler temp for a part of the year

as for your cage and the inhabitants I realy do think its a bad idea to keep them all together, you say that its big enough but animals find eatch other in the wild and thats huge

and the newt if attacked by any other cage mate may kill the attacker because of tozins in the skin

 Fires in my comunity tank.

it is true it can be very dangrous to house sallys/newts with other aanimals.take for example one of my newts got out of his cage, i later learned that my cat had eaten it and the cat got sick for 1 to 2 days(also barfed all over), so if a newt can do that to a cat think what it would do to an animal of its size.(also the newt was a red spotted newt whjich is pretty small).

you can do whatever u think is right but please be aware that isnt the best of ideas.

sry if i’m being rude but um you said the animals NEVER come in contact with each other. In this pic

I can see the leaf frog in the right hand side. Never in contact indeed. But if they stay alive for 56 years you will show us all.

Haha, the pictures are all staged. I was wondering when someone would bring that up.

The salamanders have their own water source underneath the pothos plant. This discourages them from venturing out in to the less-humid, open area where the frog inhabits.

Did you really think that the salamander would just come out and bask?

haha this topic pleases me greatly. i havn’t been here for a while but im glad to see their are more knowledge ..able people lol , i agree with the person mixing the animals. it can be done .. even if preferences are adjusted slightly to meet more then one’s needs but be very carefull and very aware of what is happening. i have experimented alot with mixing and have had to remove things in the past but if u do things proper and provide lots of space like the gentleman seems to have done it is very possible to be successful . so good luck and keep us posted on how it all works out .. but alwyas be aware

i had a african dwarf frog with my fb newts for almost a year b4 he caused a problem so just always keep a keen eye for whats going on

again good luck with you tank it looks beutiful
