Can any one give me some information on Water Dogs?

As the title states, I’d like some information on Water Dogs. I recently saw a photo to them and I’m interested in learning about them. Do people actually keep them as pets?

Yes, if you go to some other websites you’ll meet others who do so.

a water dog is the term used for larval tiger salamnders, or neotonic tiger salamanders

once the "water dog" gets to a certain age it will go through a stage like frogs in wich it turns into a terrestrial salamander

Waterdog is REALLY the name of a subspecies of mudpuppy, which can be kept as a pet, i think, the term being used for baby tigers is really a mistake.

You’re saying that this is the larvea form of a Tiger Salamander?

You’re telling me that it will turn into this?

Perhaps I should have called them Mudpuppies. That’s what I’m refering to. :]

This isn’t what the thread was about originally but I believe that some more research has to be done on the debate over mudpuppies and waterdogs. I agree with parts of what everyone else said but not everhthing.

Waterdogs and Mudpuppies belong to the Proteidae family. There are 5 species of waterdogs and mudpuppies, which are the same type of organism, all in the genera Necturus, in the U.S. The term waterdog should not refer to any other salamanders besides these. These 5 are permanently aquatic organisms (the term paedomorphic refers to this) and do not metamorphose into another life stage. Salamanders and newts, however, do transform from the larval stage (aquatic with gills and fins) to a terrestrial life form which will eventually breed in the water, like most other amphibians.

These creatures can be kept as pets. I have personally had numerous tiger salamander larvae which I raised to adults, some spotted salamanders, and 2 mudpuppies at one time. Just be sure to have a good filter system. They can get fairly smelly if not cared for properly and you will be cleaning out lots of shed skins. I would suggest at least a 20 gallon tank for 2 mudpuppies or tiger salamanders.

I forgot to mention that there are also wholly aquatic salamanders that are not mudpuppies or waterdogs. They are things like hellbenders, axolotl, and paedomorphic Ambystoma species.
