Males fighting?
about a week or so ago one newt fell into the water and had a lesion on its side where organs were coming out. the other newt is completely fine, except i’m not too sure if or how much s/he eats. anyway. they’re still really little, but i’m almost positive both were males. so could they have fought or was it just a random infection? |

An infection shouldn’t leave a salamander with a gaping wound overnight, have you noticed anything before this incident? What kind of sals do you have? It also sounds like too much damage for a young salamander to do!! I’d check your viv setup.....is there anything it could have cut itself on? Are you feeding live insects? I’ve seen crickets and mealworms that can do a nasty number on herps in no time. Anyway.....I doubt he makes it with organs spilling out and what not...geezz.....poor thing. If there is nothing he could have hurt himself on...then I don’t know what to tell you without some pictures or knowing sal species etc. Good luck. |

they’re chinese fire bellied newts. i guess thinking about it there are a couple things he could have cut himself on, but it seems unlikely. but still possible. frozen bloodworms..those couldn’t have done anything. well..he was really really struggling..and he was really sad and pathetic and we could already tell he wasn’t going to make it so we put him out of his misery in a humane way. |
