 Tiger Salamanders

Well the company that I was going to order the salamander eggs from just didn’t seem like a good idea, when I called them I got different answers from different people and they really didn’t know anything about what they were selling. Anyway I found a site that had tiger salamanders in and I ordered two of them! I can’t wait for them to show up! I was wondering what type of food source everyone has had the most success with? Crickets, red worms, earth worms, night crawlers....Also has anyone tried roaches? I keep reading there a good food source for reptiles (but I don’t know about for salamanders) and easy to breed and raise. If you do use them what type of roach are you feeding? Thanks!

Well I have mine in a large storage box (clear) with a water bowl big enough for him to swim in. (about 4 inch deep mulch, dirt and sphagnum moss mix)

Once a week I find him, Put him in his water bowl give him about 5-6 crickets. Some weeks U dont need to feed them at all. (infact thats what U have to do if U want to breed them).

And If I find a large grasshopper or locust I feed it to him, Same with worms... You can also give him fish every once in a while.

If it is skinny when it gets to You give it a pinky mouse and in one week feed him 3 or 4 crickets.
And wash him of in the sink before You feed him and make sure the water in his bowl is chlorine killed or free.

Good Luck with him.

worms and nightcrawlers are the best food for them, you can feed crickets and that once in a while, but not as the staple diet

pinkies can be offered rarely as they will make your tiger salamander very obese

so if the worms are really big and need to be cut, do they still wiggle around? (I know weird question) Will the salamander just smell them out if they don’t wiggle and move?

they sure will, tigers get so good at hand feeding that it doesn’t matter if the worm is wiggling or not
