 Amphibian Housing Question

newts and sals shouldn’t be housed with frogs or toads

many times they need different temps(sals and newts need it low, and frogs, generaly higher)

newts have toxins thats produced in their skin, and toads toads and some frogs do aswell, so if either got in a fight, someone would die

I know appropriately sized mole salamanders can be housed together, I had spotted and blue spotted salamanders housed together for a few months

heres a good link to read on this subject Link

 Amphibian Housing Question

I know I shouldent have asked that question but after seeing this vid on youtube where a guy had 3 tree Frogs 2 Organ Newts and a couple Fire Bellies Toads, I just wanted to make a viv like his. Could I see your Blue Spotted Sal setup? Im trying to see what I would like to get.

 Amphibian Housing Question

The random person on youtube wasn’t informed on how to properly care for his animals, and more than likely some animals were/will be killed after a short time in that environment.
The differing toxins in the water (oregon newt+ fb toads) would poison each other. Especially with the fact that Tarichas (oregon newts) are the most poisonous newts and would actually kill you pretty fast if you so decided to eat one.
And keeping large community tanks even from one to a hundred species also poses the risk of natural selection where the weaker animals don’t eat as much and eventually wither away while the stronger ones survive.
Less is more.

I’ve heard of yellow spotted and blue spotted mixes before and I would say that that would be the best idea if you wanted to mix.

 Amphibian Housing Question

Isn’t it possible to house firebellies in the same tank? By this, I mean firebelly newts and firebelly toads. Our newts are fine in the same tank as our toads, and we even have three crabs in there. There are three newts, and six firebelly toads. So far, none of the newts have died, or the toads.

 Amphibian Housing Question

no its not fine, firebelly toads have a huge appetite and will eat anything that moves, that being said, firebelly newts aren’t the biggest newt, and all the ones I’ve seen sold at pet stores could be eaten by a toad

those toads are also messy animals

 Amphibian Housing Question

I’m not positive on salamanders, but most newts of the same size are fine together. And i have heard of newts and frogs being together, but there is a chance your frogs would be food to the newts, same with salamanders. hope this helps!

 Amphibian Housing Question

Different species of newts, regardless of size, cannot live together because of different toxins in skins.
and firebelly toads 99.99% eat the newts. It’s one of the most common mistakes in inexperienced keepers.

Firebelly refers to having a red-orange coloured belly.
Toads don’t discriminate and only eat newts with different coloured bellies, they don’t even notice. They eat anything.

 Amphibian Housing Question

Our firebelly toads aren’t big enough to eat the newts, or the crabs. The largest newt is biggger than any of the firebellies, and the smaller ones are about the same size. None have been eaten yet. We also have a filter on the tank, and we put new water in about once a week. There haven’t been any deaths, at least not as far as the amphibians are concerned. Like I said, the first crab died because he was dropped, the second because she had a cracked shell when we got her. The other two are doing perfectly fine. So, if the newts are to big to be eaten, they probably won’t be. Same with the crabs. The largest newt has been in there with six toads for several months, the two smaller have een in there since last month, they’re all doing fine. We were honestly more concerned about the larger newt eating the smaller ones, but they’re to big for him to eat.

 Amphibian Housing Question

I have heard that the fire belly newt and fire belly toad can be housed together.

Try some tree frogs and aqutic newts/salamders so that the frog would be above the water were the newt/salamader is.

If you do follow threw with this make sure what ever 2 species you chose grow to be around the
same size. Or esl one might get eaten.

It wouldn’t work since they have different needs and requirements.

As for FBTs and FBNs, their poison can easily kill each other.
