I have 2 oregon newts, and i am going to build a platform and ramp for their land portion, but what material should i use? plastic or wood? and if i do go with plastic, are there hazards in chemicals or anything like that? thanks,

most people use plexiglass and aquarium silicone, and both are safe for any herps.

ok, and would hot glue be bad for them? (after it’s dried of course) but i was thinking of making a hidEhole and it involved some sort of glue, any ideas?

hot glue is fine, but it doesn’t last very long at all, silicone is the only real option

silicone will stick things together like glue.

hot glue will unstick pretty fast with constant water/moisture on it.
and in an amphibian tank, you’ll have a lot of water/moisture.

silicone is cheap and easy.
get it at an aquarium shop.

ok, when you say silicone, do you mean that greasy stuff that dosn’t set? well, i made a platform for my newts, (i haven’t put it in yet) and i used Elmer’s carpeting glue. it’s pretty cool, i’ll try to post some pictures of the tank!

thx again!

um..
When I used silicone, we had to work really fast to keep it from setting too fast..and that’s how other people’s experiences are, so i guess you got something different.

elmer’s carpeting glue o.O?
what are the ingredients to that? i wouldn’t trust that with one of my animals.
