 Eastern Red Backed Salamanders

Well, I just got 4 eastern redbacked salamanders. I have no experience with salamanders but i have experience with reptiles. I looked up as much info on them as i could find and I think that I got all of their stuff. 2 websites said that you could keep 6 in a 10 gallon and one website said 4 in a 10 gallon. I am keeping 4 of them in a 10 gallon. There is a large rock that they like to hide under, several smaller rocks, a large area of leaf litter, and a decent sized flat piece of bark. Their substrate is a mix of organic potting soil and dirt from my backyard. I keep their cage very humid and I know that they are nocturnal. So far the only thing that I have really gotten them to eat are tiny crickets and termites(thats what most of the websites reccommended). If anyone could tell me if I am doing something wrong or missing something that would be very appreciated.

i don’t know about this particular species but 4 of anything in a 10 gallon sounds like overcrowding unless they’re just absolutely tiny.
A cheaper and just as functional alternative to tanks are big rubbermaid containers btw.

this covers a lot of basics for general salamanders

and for food..

I believe this is your salamander..if not, just search the site. there’s tons of awesome caresheets.

yeah..im only keepiong them in that till i can get a 20 gallon tank.. theyre like 2.5 inches each. I thought it sounded weird for 4 in a 10 gallon but the 2 caresheets for them on this site said that a 10 gallon could house 1 to 4 and while the other said a 10 gallon could house 2 males and 4 females. I thought it was a bit ridiculous

Well, babies are probably better in a smaller tank so they don’t get stressed by too much space..but a bigger tank would definitely be more fitting as adults. & Go for a 20 Long, they don’t really climb so they’ll want floor space more than height. Just a tip. :)

another thing you should keep in mind is that red-backs can be very territorial, so a 20 gal long for the 4 should be good

and dont forget to keep them cool, 60’s to very low 70’s F
