 Salamander hunt!

Hello, I’ve never visited this forum before but just recently I discovered that I have several types of salamander that are native to my area of Canada. I live in southern ontario, about 40 min to Detroit, and this place is full of various frogs, toads, and snakes. Well today it rained so I decided that tonight I will pack up my flashlight and go out Salamander hunting! I’ll take pictures of what I can find, the most common are blue-spotted and redback Salamanders(a completely terrestrial species). Pics and stories will soon follow!

Hello there fellow canadian! lol
I also live in southern Ontario, in Ancaster (HAMILTON) Ever heard of it?? We are pretty close!
The COOLEST salamanders you can find around here are the yellow spotted and the tiger salamanders!
Have you ever been to muskoka? There are SO many spotted salamanders up there. I have also found eastern newts and red efts up there. Anyways, happy hunting!!!

 Salamander hunt!

Well guys no salamanders this time, It was hard to see at night :P BUT I didn’t come back empty handed, on the way back from my bush I lifted an old piece of plywood and guess what! A young Eastern Fox Snakes is curled up there sleeping, he/she is quite beautiful. Take a look!

Aside from no salamanders I had a great time and was more than happy to come away with this little guy.

Yes I pass through the Muskokas on the way up to Elk Lake area to go on a 2 week fishing trip each summer but I’ve never stopped to try and look for herps. Now I know for next time! Is daytime better for finding newts and salamanders? I heard they come out at night but I couldn’t find any, I looked all around the creeks and ponds and nothing...

 Salamander hunt!

Day or night both work for hunting salamanders. If it has rained, than some of the larger salamanders will come out of their burrows such as the tiger and yellow spotted. In the daytime they usually spend their time underground, but by lifting up dead and rotting wood, and looking under rocks in the forst you might be able to find some of the more common types like the northern redbacks, etc.

That is a beautiful snake you found there..
They are not very common and often hard to find! I hope you plan on returning it back into the wild where you found it...but congrats on finding it in the first place.

 Salamander hunt!

Welcome to the forum! I am also from southern Ontario, and am a fieldherper. Where are you located?

Where I am, I can find redback salamanders in pretty much any woodland habitat from april to october. I know a couple locations where bluespotted salamanders are quite common from april to october. In other areas I can only find them in the spring, or after a rainfall.
Occasionally I find spotted salamanders, and usually they are near vernal pools in large woodlands.
I have also occasionally found jeffersons salamanders, and jeffersons/bluespotted hybrids. They are in the same habitat as the blue spotted salamanders.
This year, I added a new species to my lifelist, the four toed salamander. They are usually only found in spring. I found a couple under some rocks and moss in swampy areas.

By the way, nice find on the fox snake! I found some earlier this year, mostly babies and a couple large adults. I hope you return it back to the wild!

Yup, missisauga is about 45 minutes east of me. The reason why you wont find many salamanders is because it is really built up around there, there isnt much woodland. Try to find some large woodlands in the country, and you will have better luck.
