 New scorpions.

Hey there guys. Well, I adopted two scorpions from my cousin who didnt take good care of them. They are one male, and one female. They were living in a tiny enclosure together and couldn’t stand seeing them in little space. I know it’s probably isn’t much but I had a spare 5.5 gallon kritter keeper(glass with lock top screen) that I put them in.

Anyways, I put them in there and theyre getting along fine. Both are walking around. I got them two hides and a water bowl and crickets to which have all been eaten. they are emporer scorpions.

I know i should get a 10 gallon, but in the meantime would the 5.5 gallon suffice for a week and a half? Im in the process of moving my ball python to a 20L and going to use her current 10g for them.

Hey
Yeah, a 5.5 gallon is perfectly fine to house 2 emperor scorpions. I actually prefer 5.5 to a 10 gallon. It makes feeding them easier and also saves space. They don’t need much room at all since they will
most likely stay in one spot.
Make sure the substrate is coco fiber though and have the humidity high for them. You can do this by dumping water onto the substrate until it is moist to the touch but not wet. The humidity is good at 70-80%

You only have to feed them 2-3 times a week, make sure crickets aren’t running all over the place in the enclosure either. I usually have 1 or 2 crickets in the enclosure only.

They also require a heating source unless you live in a warm area. The temperatures should be around 75-85 degrees F.

Hope this helps, have fun taking care of them, they are awesome little guys :D

Thanks very much. I think its warm enough here (Austin, TX). Ive been having fun looking at them from the aquarium. What type of substrate should I use? I have a snake and monitor and I use Cpress mulch for both and temporarily have this for the scorpions. I know they burrow and Cypress is a no burrow type of substrate I think. What should I use?

yeah, cypress mulch is not the best for them.

I suggest buying coco fiber bricks or using peat as the substrate. You can also use top soil (fertilizer free) as substrate. These can hold humidity much better than mulch.

Thanks. My local scorpion friend gave me Jungle Mix Bag(Peat Moss). Looks like dirt. They went into the hide and are walking around. I let the big male on my arm and he walked around fine.

I also learned they have other pincer like teeth at the top of their heads! :D

yea, peat moss is fine.

lol yeah, when I first found that out I was like, Cooolll!
You should really watch them when they eat now. I believe they are called Chelicerae and is used to tear food apart for them to ingest more easily. Looks pretty sweet when they’re used, I feel bad for the cricket though lol

yeah holding them is amazing as long as you dont make any sudden moves or anything they find threatening, which you can work out what they would go mad about lol.

i hold my male regulary now, i think he knows when im going to hold him now, walks straight onto my hand, makes me abit nervous when he rubs his sting on my hand though, not too sure what that means lol.

and yeah i wouldnt worry too much about space unless its ridicously small, 2 hides, water dish is all you need, aslong as theres some space aswell you should be fine, get some photos for us if you can :)

Thanks guys. I will. I got them two hides and to my surprise they share a hide. They made a hole underneath and they sleep together. :D
